The Powers that Be giveth, the powers that be taketh away.
A day after learning the name of the actress who would play Edwina, Kate’s younger sister and the diamond of the season, Charithra Chandran, we get the devastating news that Regé-Jean Page, our Simon, won’t return for season 2 of Bridgerton.
Talk about a blow.
Let’s focus on the good first, Chandran looks like the perfect casting opposite Simone Ashley, who is set to play Kate Sharma (in the books Kate Sheffield), the woman who will become Anthony’s Viscountess. Edwina isn’t just Kate’s sister, though, she’s the one Anthony sets his sight on first, as he looks for a wife he won’t care about.
Except …it’s easy to care about Edwina, and we the viewers definitely want to. Anthony, no, he can keep his eyes trained on Kate, that’s all fine and good.
Rupert Young has also joined the cast of Bridgerton in an undisclosed role that is widely speculated to be that of the man inheriting the Featherington state.
And then, of course, we have the announcement about Simon, and Regé-Jean Page’s departure. Not a real shock for us book readers, but still truly sad, as we would have loved to have seen more of Simon and Daphne’s love, a little bit of Simon teasing Anthony – who has absolutely earned it – and of course, that iconic Pall Mall game.
Though the announcement sounds definitive, let’s remember that for now the show is only confirmed for season 2. We might yet get to see Simon again if (when) the show is renewed for more seasons. Fingers crossed for that!
