Things are more real than they’ve ever been now that Black Widow‘s release date is official again. Disney recently announced that the film dedicated to the MCU’s first female Avenger would land in theaters and on Disney+ on July 9, 2021. Now that we have that to look forward to, Marvel Studios and Disney are amping up the film’s promotion. The latest addition is a new trailer that spotlight’s what this film is all about: Natasha Romanoff‘s legacy.
It’s impossible to enter any discourse about the MCU without the question of “Should it have been Natasha or Clint?” coming up in conversation. No matter the answer, the question itself reveals that both characters have loyal fanbases willing to debate why Marvel should extend his or her story on the big screen.
Luckily for both sides of that argument, Marvel Studios announced a solo movie for Natasha Romanoff and a Hawkeye series with Jeremy Renner returning as Clint Barton at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. The former was welcomed with messages of gratitude but also frustration. The latter comes from a rightful feeling that it’s taken the MCU too long to get to this point, and that’s true. It shouldn’t have taken more than a decade for the first female Avenger to have a single film. This becomes even more frustrating when compared to her male partners’ detailed properties.
Ultimately, it’s such a relief that we are finally to this point — no longer how long the journey has been. Black Widow is just a few months away, and this new trailer packs a punch. Though much of the footage is reused from other trailers and MCU movies, new moments are sprinkled throughout the two minutes.

We get to see more glimpses into what’s shaping up to be quite the contentious family reunion between Natasha, Alexei, Melina, and Yelena. There are so many quick moments in this trailer that emphasize how impactful this group of characters has been on Natasha’s life, especially Yelena.
Natasha’s voiceover is reminiscent of the other trailers, but it never gets old to hear Natasha’s story told in her own words. For so long, Marvel Studios molded Natasha’s story to fit into another project. Black Widow is hers. It’s about her world, her secrets, and her legacy.
Natasha’s time as an Avenger has been impactful on the fictional world she inhabits, as well as on the fans who connect with the character. But there is more to her than those years we see on screen. We’re finally getting to see more sides of her that will only contribute to the last ten years. It’s also confirmed that the events of Black Widow will have lasting effects on the MCU since Florence Pugh is set to reprise her role as Yelena Belova on Hawkeye.
Natasha’s legacy lives on in her memory, and Black Widow is a massive part of that. We are counting down the days until we can finally see what this film has to share.
