Shadow and Bone is now a reality! As you already have two reviews, one from the point of view of a reader and another from that of a non-reader, I’m going to sit here to choose 5 scenes that you can’t miss from each episode, either because they are essential for the development of the episode or because they’re the ones I like the most because, after all, this is my list. It’s the turn of Shadow And Bone 1×06 “The Heart Is An Arrow”.
“Inej!”

Crows vs Grisha fight scene GIVE ME LIFE! It is just out of our dreams. So yeah, this scene is part of our 5 scenes list. Watching Aleksander against Kaz, the way Aleksander knows who he is and how Kaz defends himself as only he knows how. Seeing Jesper right in his element, on the edge of risk, bordering on recklessness, shooting to save his life and seeing Inej in her field, fighting with knives drawn and bare chest, killing again. And, again, she does it for Kaz. And Jesper. She had no intention of killing that Grisha, but she swears that she will go after her most loved ones.
So she thinks of Kaz and Jesper killed by the hand of that Grisha and she knows she can’t allow it. Inej knows that she has no other way out and ends that life. For them. For the ones she loves. She cannot live in a world without Kaz or Jesper.. As we discussed in 5 scenes you can’t miss episode 5, Inej is capable of giving even her soul for the people she loves. Without a doubt. And she does it again here.
But that fight has a price for Inej in addition to her soul. She’s hurt and bleeding. Her life is in danger. And when Kaz sees her … the way he calls out her name. The way he wants to touch her, to see for himself that she is alive. The way he wants to be the one to carry her in his arms … it’s a physical pain that you see on Kaz’s face and that reverberates in our bones.
Kaz’s mouth doesn’t make any sound but he’s screaming silently because he needs to be able to touch Inej, he needs to be him who helps her, who she leans on, who heals her. But he can’t. Kaz must settle for scanning her over and over again with his eyes to verify that she is really still alive, hurt, but alive.
Freddy is so gorgeous here. Really, Bravo! He has perfectly captured who Kaz Brekker is and what he feels.
“How did she get away?”

Another Kanej scene in our 5 scenes you can’t miss! But it is that these two deserve to be in each and every one of the articles. This is a small scene but one that is tremendously important. Inej lets Alina escape, she saw that Alina is no imposter and she really can summon the Sun. So she just lets her go … and Kaz knows it.
But why? Her job was to kidnap her and bring her to Ketterdam and Inej just … she kept it from happening. And Kaz wants to know why the hell she did it. Many things depend on that job, including her freedom and Crow Club. Kaz could live without Crow Club, despite being his legacy, but he couldn’t live without Inej being free. That he could not bear. He doesn’t care about losing everything if Inej gets her freedom.
But Inej doesn’t know all this and she doesn’t want to kidnap the only person who can free them from Shadow Fold. She doesn’t want to kidnap a Saint. Not with her faith. Not with what Alina can do. Kaz tries to make her see that Alina is just an imposter, someone performing a very elaborate magic trick. Although, in reality, he saw her and knows that she is real, despite his skeptical nature, Kaz knows that Alina is the only one who can take down Shadow Fold.
But that for Kaz is not important, what is important is Inej’s freedom. He puts her above everything because nothing and no one is more important than her to him. And he knows Inej, so he knows that she won’t agree to do the job if she isn’t convinced that Alina is an imposter.
Everything would be solved if, here, Kaz told her why he needs so much to finish the job. Her freedom is at stake. The Crow Club is up for grabs. They need this work to be completed. And I love it when he finally tells her, unintentionally, but unable to take it anymore and just when she realizes what is happening and begins to understand why, Kaz gets up and leaves, because he can’t stand her know it.
He can’t stand her knowing that he loves her, because she deserves someone much better than him. Bastard of the Barrel and Dirtyhands will never measure up to her. So he doesn’t want her to see through him. In fact, she sees more than he likes or can bear. She understands him – and vice versa – in a way that scares him. So he doesn’t want her to see everything … because he can never have her, he is hers but she will never be his, she is nobody’s and she never will be. But Inej sees through all those barriers that Kaz raises. And she knows it.
“Your power doesn’t scare me”

Malina is in our 5 scenes list again! Once Alina and Mal meet again, everything seems to be fine again in the world…but it just isn’t. Alina is different now, not only because of her power, but she inevitably changed when she discovered that she was Grisha and practically a Saint. She found herself and explored who she was beyond Mal. And now that she’s next to him again, Alina is afraid Mal won’t accept her.
Mal knows her simply as Alina, her friend, the skinny girl he met at the orphanage, a strong but insecure girl who struggled to try to go unnoticed. Now, she is very different, but Mal is still just as important to her as he was then. It has always been them against the world.
But what if Mal fears her now? After all, they have known Grisha and they have always seemed too proud and too powerful to bother them. What if now Mal can’t see beyond her power? What if he doesn’t recognize Alina? Because she, despite everything, remains the same, the essence of her remains the same. She’s still her.
So Alina is unsure about using her power when she is with Mal. She is who she is and she cannot and doesn’t want to hide or run from it again, to repress her power. She is Grisha, she is the Sun Summoner but she is also the same Alina and Mal is still half of her heart. And she doesn’t want to lose Mal again. It’s unthinkable. So the only way out she has left from her is to show her power to Mal and watch him. She knows him and will know if he is scared.
But he is not. Alina’s power doesn’t scare him because it’s still her. He doesn’t care if she has powers or not. She is still the same sweet, strong, warrior and brave woman that he fell in love with. She is still the same woman that gives up to her soul for those she loves. She is still half of his heart. She’s still his north, she’s still his home. He almost lost her before he could tell her everything she makes him feel. Mal is not going to allow a foolish thing like mindless fear to make him make the same mistake again.
So he is not afraid. She is Grisha, and she invokes the sun but she is Alina. He knows her. He loves her. In fact, he is proud that she has found herself, that she knows who she is and accepts it, he is not going to ask her to give that up, that she give up herself, he never would. He loves that woman and nothing else matters.
“Go to the north”

Alina must go back to making tough decisions. She must decide between running away with Mal again, trying to get to a place where Aleksander’s influence and his power can’t reach them or face him and hunt the deer before him. Thus, with the amplifier of the deer and her power she can face the power of Aleksander and end Shadow Fold and his reign of terror.
But Alina is tired of running away. If discovering that she was a Grisha taught her anything is to stop hiding and accept who she is. All her life she hid to go unnoticed, not to attract attention, hoping to almost disappear so that others would not realize that she was there, so that they would not see her, so that only Mal would see her.
That ended. She won’t hide anymore. She is going to face her destiny and, for that, her first step is to capture that deer before Aleksander. So her decision is made. She and Mal will go north to get the deer and meet her destiny.
“She’s going for the deer”

This scene. One of the top 5 scenes of the episode. Aleksander knows Alina. In the time they have spent together he has seen her mature, flourish, know her own power and her limits. He watched her grow. So with only a few clues, he knows what Alina is up to: she will go after the deer to try to get there before him. At the end of the day, at some point, their minds work the same, the difference is in their goals and that Aleksander is capable of doing whatever it takes to achieve his.
Now that Aleksander knows Alina’s plan, next is the challenge. It was destined that way, right? Light against darkness. Him against her. Aleksander is not willing to allow Alina to ruin what he has been hoping to do for so long … and Alina is going to fight to prevent Aleksander from getting all that power.
So, the dice is cast for them. Aleksander would have liked it to be different and Alina too. But now they find themselves facing off on two different sides of a war. And the only question is what will prevail in the end, the light or the dark?
And these are the 5 scenes that you can’t miss from Shadow And Bone 1×06 “The Heart Is An Arrow”. Stay tuned for the 5 scenes you can’t miss from episode 7 that we will publish tomorrow.
