The 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards were last night, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe took center stage for most of the ceremony. This awards show is extra special since the voting is fan-driven. We firsthand that MCU fans are a dedicated bunch. That undeniable dedication and passion are reason enough not to be shocked that WandaVision swept! Those wins aren’t the only exciting things about the MCU that happened on and off the stage.
We put all the best, funniest, and heartfelt moments into a list so that you don’t miss a single thing. If you’re anything like us, you’ll want to watch those exclusive Black Widow and Loki clips until June and July 9th, respectively.
1. Anthony Mackie, Elizabeth Olsen, & Kathryn Hahn Shine on the Red Carpet
Anthony Mackie, Elizabeth Olsen, and Kathryn Hahn did not come to play on this red carpet. Each of them looks absolutely stunning! There are plenty of photos for you to adore from the carpet. We are going to share one of, if not the, best moment from the carpet. It’s when Josh Horowitz (who I am a massive fan of) accidentally reunited two MCU stars on the carpet after who knows how long. That’s right, Anthony Mackie shared a sweet moment on the carpet when Elizabeth Olsen surprised him.
2. Anthony Mackie Wins Best Hero
Anthony Mackie took home the night’s first award with Best Hero for Sam Wilson in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. This win marks Anthony’s first award as Captain America, which is more than exciting. His speech touched on all the hard work that went into making the show during such a difficult time for everyone worldwide. Then, of course, Mackie took a second to thank all the wonderful fans who supported the show and helped him get the award.
3. Elizabeth Olsen Wins Best Performance in a Show
Elizabeth Olsen took home her first golden popcorn of the night by winning Best Performance in a Show for Wanda Maximoff in WandaVision. We are massive Wanda Maximoff and WandaVision fans around here, and we know we aren’t alone in that. It’s so easy to celebrate this win for Lizzie Olsen because her hard work is on display in every single scene of that nine-episode series. We hope that this fan-voted award bodes well for the upcoming Emmy season.
4. Scarlett Johansson Wins Generation Award
Scarlett Johansson received the Generation Award at this year’s MTV Movie and TV Awards. The video below does not include Billy Porter’s introduction for his friend and colleague or the impressive reel of Johansson’s work. However, it does include a hilarious moment that includes Johansson’s husband, Colin Jost. We definitely suggest catching the award show on a streaming platform for those special moments.
Regardless of my personal opinions on certain comments, Johansson has made in recent history, I believe she has had quite an impressive career. The Natasha Romanoff sections of the reel are proof alone of how much heart and hard work Johansson has brought to that part over the last decade.
5. Scarlett Johansson Shares an Exclusive Sneak Peek at Black Widow
Johansson’s acceptance speech for the Generation Award was the perfect lead-in for an exclusive sneak peek at Black Widow. This is the first official clip for the movie, which makes us believe we are well on our way to a massive Black Widow press rollout. Now that we know Black Widow is releasing simultaneously on Disney+ and in theaters on July 9th, it’s easier to be optimistic about what’s to come.
As for the clip, it’s everything we could ever want from a high-speed chase starring Johansson as Natasha Romanoff and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. This duo is one Marvel fans have been waiting a long time to see on screen. This clip pulls their dynamic right to the surface even though they could get severely hurt or die at any second.
6. Elizabeth Olsen and Kathryn Hahn Win Best Fight
Next, Elizabeth took the stage for the second time when she won Best Fight with Kathryn Hahn for Wanda vs. Agatha in WandaVision. Their acceptance speech for this award is one you do not want to miss. They reenact their fight sequence without any special effects, wires, or any Marvel magic. Somehow it’s still just as amazing? That’s the power of Lizzie Olsen and Kathryn Hahn.
The magic doesn’t stop there because Olsen and Hahn took time to congratulate and thank their stunt doubles, CC Ice, Jenny White, and Whitney Coleman, for all their hard work. After all, they would not have won that award without the incredible work of their stunt doubles. This moment feels very familiar to when Brie Larson won Best Fight for Captain Marvel back in 2019. Larson brought her stunt doubles Renae Moneymaker and Joanna Bennett on stage with her to accept the award. We love women supporting women!
7. Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie Win Best Duo
Anthony Mackie took home two golden popcorns for Best Duo, posting on Instagram that he would be passing along the other to his co-star. Mackie even shared a photo of himself on the way to the show to prove how sad he was that Sebastian Stan wouldn’t be attending with him. So yes, Mackie and Stan won Best Duo for Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It’s a very deserved win if you ask us. That duo made TFATWS all the better. It’s also a duo that’s carried MCU press junkets since 2014.
Once again, we don’t have footage of Mackie’s iconic acceptance speech, but we do have the next best thing. Variety spoke with Mackie on the red carpet and asked him about Stan’s upcoming project Pam & Tommy. Mackie had nothing but good things to say about his friend. We love this friendship to the moon and back (Do you see what we did there?), and this moment is so sweet. Mackie said, “People being to see him for the chameleon that he is, not just a beautifully amazing blue-eyed god that he is. It’s very refreshing,” after gushing about Stan’s transformative Instagram posts.
8. Tom Hiddleston Shares an Exclusive Sneak Peek at Loki
Tom Hiddleston stopped by the award show virtually to premiere an exclusive sneak peek at Loki. This clip is an extension of the elevator scene highlighted in most trailers and TV spots for the series. Owen Wilson’s character introduces himself to the trickster as Agent Mobius. There’s a quick rundown of the TVA (Time Variance Authority), and then Loki takes the reins and critiques the entire organization.
This clip is all the proof we need to know that Loki is not the same person we last saw in Avengers: Endgame, which makes plenty of sense. This version of the character, this variant, is the one who took the Tesseract and made a mess of time, or else the TVA wouldn’t care about him. Loki‘s is going to be a ride, and we cannot wait.
9. Kathryn Hahn Wins Best Villain
Did you think anyone else would take this one home? Agatha Harkness as her own theme song! It’s beyond perfect that she walked onto the stage with “Agatha All Along” playing in the background. There’s no way anyone else could have won this one! Kathryn Hahn’s acceptance speech is heartfelt, silly, and even takes an inspirational turn at the end. We agree that all of us witches should step into our power and use it for good!
10. WandaVision Wins Best Show
Last but certainly not least, Elizabeth Olsen and Kathryn Hahn accepted the Best Show golden popcorns on for WandaVision‘s big win. WandaVision won every award it was up for at the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards, and all feels right in the world. This show is one that brought lots of us together in a time when we desperately needed community and escapism. Somehow WandaVision spoke to a lot of the complicated feelings many of us were experiencing. Knowing about this show’s special connection with its viewers, it’s all the more meaningful that this is a fan-voted award.
