It’s almost as if Marvel Studios anticipated our fears that there would be a break in MCU content after Loki and Black Widow. Fear not; Marvel Studios’ first animated Disney+ series What If…? is coming to the streaming service next month. We can enter the multiverse alongside some of our favorite characters starting Wednesday, August 11. Marvel Studios gifted us an action-packed trailer that leaves us asking a million questions until then.
According to Marvel, What If…? “asks the question if one thing changes, what kind of ripple effects would that cause? The series showcases compelling and re-imagined famous events from films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, creating a multiverse of infinite possibilities. Fan-favorite characters return, including Peggy Carter, T’Challa, Doctor Strange, Killmonger, Thor, and more. The new series, directed by Bryan Andrews with AC Bradley as head writer, features signature MCU action with a curious twist.”
As for the trailer, there is so much to discover in every single frame. There are unexpected pairings and heroes with equally unexpected powers at every turn. We get more footage of Hayley Atwell’s return as Peggy Carter, but on What If…? she is known as Captain Carter. What’s not to love about that?
Beyond the trippy plot of the series, some things will shock fans, like Robert Downey Jr. isn’t the one voicing Tony Stark. It is an adjustment to hear someone else play Tony, but it is likely to happen eventually. Alternatively, it’s really emotional to hear Chadwick Boseman‘s voice as T’Challa once again. He truly made this character everything he is on screen and beyond. We are so lucky to get to spend this extra time with T’Challa.
Furthermore, as massive WandaVision fans, we do have some concerns about Vision’s presence in the trailer and poster. We don’t know if we can take watching Vision in pain and/or dying. Vision rips the Mind Stone out of his own head in the trailer. Then, on the poster, Vision appears to be in the armor that resembles the body of Ultron. You can see the Infinity Stones on the chest of the armor when you look a little closer.
If we’ve learned anything from the Infinity Saga and the Phase 4 projects so far, the Infinity Stones are crucial to everything. What could it mean that Vision is at the center of it all? We’re falling right into the Watcher’s vision by preparing ourselves to sit back and watch all of this unfold.
