Mattel really is throwing everything at it’s new Barbie movie. Not only is it starring Margot Robbie, but Greta Gerwig has joined to direct the film. And while details are scarce on what direction they’re going to take this childhood favorite toy, the internet is pretty excited for the possibility of what’s to come. Gerwig has shown her capability when it comes to directing in Little Women and Lady Bird. And Robbie has shown her acting chops in movies like Birds of Prey, I, Tony, and The Wolf on Wall Street.
And as someone who played with Barbie’s growing up, has enjoyed the movies, and is a big fan of Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse I’m here for it. I’m especially here for it if they don’t make it dark and brooding. Please don’t go the way of The CW’s take on The Powerpuff Girls. Barbie is hella talented, conquers any career path set before her, and has become a brand synonymous with fun, laughs, family, and feminist ideals. That last bit might rankle some feathers but you can just deal with it. Barbie is an icon. Always will be.
