When you think of gymnastics, Simone Biles will always be a name that we think of. But she should never be just defined by gymnastics, because the woman is so much more. She’s a hero.
We think that it was summed up best in Nastia Liukin‘s Instagram post.
“Dear Simone, Thank you,” she began on her post. “Thank you for showing the depth of who you are beyond an athlete as a leader, role model, mental health warrior and person.”
“Thank you for epitomizing what the next generation of role models should be. Thank you for creating a safer space for current and future athletes to unequivocally be themselves. Thank you for helping the world realize that prioritizing your physical and mental health is the mark of a true champion.
She continued, “Thank you for illuminating that nobody is defined by the depth of their trophy case, and that you don’t owe anything to anyone but yourself and the pursuit of happiness.”
“Thank you for taking the sport of gymnastics to new heights as the unanimous GOAT. No one will be remembered for any single routine, competition, or medal. You, however, will undeniably be remembered by many for the compassion and bravery shown here in Tokyo. You came here as a gymnast, and you’re leaving as a hero. xo, NL.”
The world started to pour out their love and support for Simone Biles after she withdrew from the team competition and the All Around Finals. She definitely made the best decision for herself and by doing so, showed millions of people that it is okay and necessary to put your mental health first.
Who Simone Biles has shown herself to be has changed the world for million of young athletes.
While none of us can imagine what she is going through, it’s definitely been important to support her. She’s received an outpouring of love from celebrities and her fans. She has never owed any of us an explanation.
But what she did say last night on Twitter made us cry our eyes out.
“the outpouring love & support I’ve received has made me realize I’m more than my accomplishments and gymnastics which I never truly believed before. 🤍,” she wrote.
She is truly more. She’s a human being and we’re proud to live in a time where Simone Biles exists and inspires us all.
