A Train to Busan US remake is apparently happening and already I can feel myself crying inside. There doesn’t need to be a remake of this iconic movie. And I’m here to talk about why. From no one being able to replace or do what Don Lee does to the fact that you know they’re going to make Last Train to NY sexy for no reasons, let’s talk about why this is a bad idea.
1. No one can do what Gong Yoo did.
If there’s one reason why you watch Train to Busan, let it be for Gong Yoo’s amazing performance as the lead. His portrayal and character struck a chord within me that I don’t think anyone can measure up to. Seriously, no US actor has ever made me weep like he has and I somehow keep coming back for more from him anyway. The US remake wishes they had this star power and they, unfortunately, won’t because they’ll hire someone like Noah Centineo to play the lead. Hard pass.
2. Who wants to come to NY during a zombie apocalypse?
Seriously, if there’s anywhere that you want to be during an apocalypse, it’s not NY. And you know the movie is going to make it that they need to get to NYC, because cinema seems to forget there are other places in NY besides NYC. So, they’ll probably make it about, “Oh no. I have family in NYC and I have to get to them because I’m the only one that can save them.” Have they never watched I Am Legend? We’ve got the population to make the zombie apocalypse an absolute shit show. Stay away from NY. Please.
3. No one can replace Don Lee.
You thought I was done and was only going to mention Gong Yoo? Oh no. If we’re going to talk about him then we’re going to talk about Don Lee and his character. If Yoo made me cry then Lee made me want to punch zombies in the face and save the day, over and over again. And his character is *chefs kiss.* Not only is he funny but he’s relatable, caring, kind, and the bravest man you’ll ever see on screen. There’s no doubt in my mind that anyone can replace him and I can’t stop picturing Jack Black taking his place in the US remake and it becoming the thing of nightmare.
4. The US remake will no doubt make it sexy for reasons.
Train to Busan isn’t sexy. It doesn’t need to be. But you know that the US remake will make it sexy for reasons. Maybe the zombies will be sexy? Maybe the conductor or staff with be sexy? For some reason, when things get made in the US, sex has to be infused into the production in some way or another. And personally, they can keep it. Sure, exceptions are to be made but you know that in a US horror movie there’s eventually going to be someone having sex and being punished for it two seconds later cuz zombie.
Train to Busan is available on Netflix.
