Personally, we’ve been waiting for a show like Epix new series From. Too long have we been deprived of something that pulls at your heartstrings while scaring the hell out of you to the point where you’re like, “Maybe I shouldn’t open my curtain because there could be something creeping on the other side of it.” And when a show blends into the real world and influences you there, you know you’ve got something unique in your hands. And that’s what we saw in From 1×01-1×03.
At the heart of Epix’ From, are families. Yes, the commercial for From might make it seem like Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno), Jim (Eion Bailey), Julie (Hannah Cheramy), Ethan (Simon Webster), and Boyd (Harold Perrineau) are the ones EVERYTHING is happening to, but that’s just not true. This whole town is built up of families. Some of them are by blood and others are by choice. But it’s become clear that the only way to survive this town and the situations they’re all stuck in, is by working together. Sure, there are bumps in the road, like any community, but survival is key and no one does it alone.
This concept of family is what makes everything else so scary on From.

There is something about this town that wants to devour its residents. It has drawn them in, one by one, to play games with them and eat them up. The fact that it takes on the faces of those we loved and lost, hurts even more, making the situation hard for all of them because it shakes the feeling of who you can trust. And From not holding back on what these creatures look like or how they actually devour you makes things even scarier while keeping a hint of secrecy at what they truly are for the audience to figure out as From progresses.
In many ways, this show reminds of us of Lost. And at first glance, it’s easy to understand why. It’s got the talented Perrineau, who many fans still love to hate after all these years for his portrayal of Michael. And director Jack Bender and writer Javier Grill-Marxuach are involved. But it’s more than that. It’s the blatant understanding that the relationships between these people are the heart of it all, that the monsters are there to bring them together, and that no matter if they win or lose against them, they will have won because of the choices they make along the way.

As you can tell, this writer is a fan of Lost. Always will be. And we see that same greatest in From. The main difference is…that From is heaps and bounds scarier. That whole rock hanging by the door to protect from the evil? Scary. The way they devour you? Horrifying. The way they slowly come upon you as if they are playing with their food and want to take their time? Disturbing. Combine that with the family of it all in From 1×01-1×03 and you’ve got a recipe for something we’ve never seen before but want more of.
From airs new episodes every Sunday on Epix.
