In Roswell, New Mexico 4×03 “Subterranean Homesick Alien” relationships were tested, new friendships were forged, and of course there were some interesting new developments. We also got a bit of a shocker that we may or may not have seen coming.
Scientific Anomalies
Bonnie, Clyde, and Tezca have been causing a lot of problems in Roswell since they arrived. Everyone is working to figure out what their arrival means and just what it is that they are hoping to accomplish. We already know that part of it, or maybe all of it is “the alighting.” What that is, we still don’t know. Max is extremely frustrated because he still hasn’t caught Bonnie and Clyde. He almost had Clyde in Roswell, New Mexico episode 4×02: “Fly” but his attempt at impersonating Jones to trap him fell flat.
Max hasn’t been hiding his frustration well at all. He has a very short temper and always seems to be on edge. He’s snapping at people like Anatsa (we still haven’t forgotten how he talked to her.) and Michael. It’s just behavior that is so unlike him. We finally got to the root cause when he opened up to Liz about what’s been happening to him since she untethered him from Jones.
I guess we shouldn’t have been surprised that Max and Jones being separated would lead to consequences. After all Max was cloned from Jones’s DNA. Since the separation of the two, Max has been feeling like his abilities have changed. And from the way he described the change to Liz, it’s a pretty big one. Max tells her that his abilities have multiplied and he’s afraid of what he can do. For him it feels like he’s “the Hulk in a China shop.
We have to admit, we’re curious to see what parts of Max’s abilities have changed. Liz didn’t really give him the best advice on how to manage it either. She pretty much told him that they will find a way to stop the new aliens without using his powers. That may work for now but, Max is going to probably need to harness his powers to stop the triad. I mean after all, why bring up that his abilities have multiplied if we won’t see them put to use?
Max needs to address this new situation with his powers sooner rather than later because when the battle between the triad comes, he has to know what he’s doing. Max spends too much time being afraid of his own power when he should be embracing it. Like I said, there is going to be a big showdown and if he isn’t prepared, things are going to go bad.
Liz is back to her science work and the latest clue she and Max find leads them to an old oil field where Shivani just happens to be. Of course, Liz is surprised to see her there and when she finds out the reason, it’s even more of a surprise. Shivani has bought out the land there. Clearly, there is something big happening on that land if Shivani bought it. The upside is that Liz can now work out there too undeterred by anything.
Everyone seems to have their reasons for being on that oil field including Shivani. For Shivani, the alien research can help her and Allies daughter who is sick. Shivani has done some studies and believes that something out there possess a unique healing property that can help her daughter. We know Jones was a healer, so his alien stuff has to be all over that field. Shivani does end up making a discovery. Or rather her team does. That discovery is a piece of alien skin. We don’t know whose alien skin it is but if Liz and Shivani work together they’ll probably figure it out.

Our girl Maria was back in this episode, and she’s also been dealing with some issues of her own. Just as we predicted, she’s facing problems stemming from her treatments that Liz and Kyle came up with to prevent her brain degeneration. While the treatment was successful and Maria is no longer showing signs of the degeneration, she can’t have visions anymore.
Maria being Maria tries in her own way to attempt to conjure up a vision. That involves her stealing Kyles Epi-pen to generate adrenaline which would trigger one. Unfortunately, the shot doesn’t work. This isn’t a good thing for Maria because right now everyone is expecting her to work her magic. After learning that the safety deposit box at the bank belonged to Marias grandmother Patricia, Max and Liz are sure that Maria having a vision will help them figure out what’s in the box.
Because she puts so much pressure on herself and doesn’t want anyone especially Liz to worry, she acts like everything is all good. Maria is always spending so much time thinking about everyone else that she doesn’t take the time to take care of herself. She thinks that Liz will feel guilty and go on a mission to try and determine what went wrong with the science and try to restore Marias ability. Maria wants to do this on her own but sooner or later the truth is going to come out.
At this point Dallas is the only one who knows what Maria is going through because he just happened to be at the bar as she was trying to have a vision. We love seeing Dallas and Maria together because they really have developed a camaraderie. The fact that Maria feels like she can open up to him is nice. It doesn’t hurt that he provides such encouraging words. When Maria is feeling like she’s useless he reminds her that just because she can’t have visions that doesn’t mean her mind doesn’t work.
Their teamwork leads to them getting to the vault where they locate some sort of alien artifact. We don’t know what the artifact is or why Patricia had it but it’s going to play a big part. Bonnie and Clyde were searching the vault for it so it’s got to be important.
Taking The Uncomfortable Path
We can’t think of anything more awkward than a double date. When that double date involves a person, you’ve been pining for that’s even worse. This happens to Kyle when Isobel and Anatsa show up for a wine tasting date that he’s on with no-name hospital girl, who we finally know is Kira. It’s as uncomfortable as it sounds. At first things are going somewhat okay but this is a wine tasting and alcohol loosens the tongue. Kyles date becomes extra, extra chatty and Isobel and Anatsa learn that she works at an insurance company that’s reviewing the claim for the bank that was robbed by Bonnie and Clyde.
Anatsa’s reporter mind goes into high gear and she’s immediately devouring every single piece of information she can get from Kira. Try as they might, Isobel and Kyle are unable to sway the conversation in a different direction. This leads us to question just how well the mindscape actually worked because Anatsa sure isn’t letting shit go.
When Isobel pulls Kyle aside about the situation, she lets him know that she mindscaped Anatsa. This sends her into a panic attack because she’s feeling like a terrible person. Her fear is that she’s doing the same thing her ex-Noah did to her. Kyle being the sweetheart he is lets her know she is nothing like Noah. He tells Isobel that if she is feeling this way then it’s best that she come clean and tell Anatsa the truth.
Isobel decides to take Kyles advice, but Anatsa derails that plan when she confronts Isobel about her relationship with Kyle. Anatsa can see the way that Isobel and Kyle are with one another and how they share secrets. Isobel does her best to explain that she and Kyle are only friends, but Anatsa doesn’t buy it. As Anatsa puts it she’s tired of “feeling like the side chick in my own relationship.” Ouch! Isobel doesn’t respond well to that and quickly says that they probably need some time apart.
It was unexpected that Isobel would have that reaction and I guess it was shocking to Anatsa too. We don’t know if Isobel just panicked and said the first thing she could think of because she didn’t want to tell Anatsa the truth just yet, but it seems like right now their relationship is over.
Other Things
- So… How long until Michael finds out that his man is buried underground?
- “I am the screwup, Max is the Cop.” We really wish Michael would stop beating himself up. He is worth more than he can possibly imagine. That’s why we need Alex back to remind him.
- Max really needs to listen to Michael more. They’ve been fighting a lot this season and we’re only three episodes in. We thought he was going to stop underestimating him.
- Even the wine tastings in Roswell are space related…
- “Taking the uncomfortable path is never easy.” – Kyle to Isobel.
- We really wanted to like Kira, but she got super annoying after all that drinking.
- Good on Michael realizing that Bonnie was an alien when she didn’t know what Footloose was or who Kevin Bacon was.
- Michael literally helped Bonnie and Clyde and Clyde repays him by punching him in the face?
- Bonnie is a lot like Rosa and we kinda like her.
- Speaking of Rosa, is anyone at least going to have a conversation about her time in New York?
- We really, really like this Maria/Dallas pairing.
- Maria’s mom is missing again. Wonder what that means.
- We really don’t know much about Tezca but so far, she’s a pain in the ass.
- The one-night Isobel decides to go into do not disturb mode is the night the shit hits the fan.
- Jones is missing. WHAT????????
