With so many horror movies out there, there’s a chance you missed a couple here and there. To make things easier, because who doesn’t like a good list, here’s a list of some of the most underrated movies out there when it comes to all things spooky and scary. Sure, these horror movies might not be perfect. But boy are they scary. And isn’t that the point of horror, especially around Halloween?
1. The Wretched
Synopsis: A defiant teenage boy, struggling with his parent’s imminent divorce, faces off with a thousand-year-old witch, who is living beneath the skin of and posing as the woman next door.
Why you should watch: The Wretched has some of the most chilling and subtle scenes that you end up looking at your front door and wondering if the door is locked. Also, is your wife “really your wife”? You should test that.
2. The Tunnel
Synopsis: An investigation into a government cover-up leads to a network of abandoned train tunnels deep beneath the heart of Sydney. As a journalist and her crew hunt for the story, it quickly becomes clear the story is hunting them.
Why you should watch: The Tunnel is a found footage-style horror movie that crosses over with a documentary. It tells the story of a journalist and their crew as they are hunted by something unknown. This movie gets extra points for the subtle scares that made me go, “Nope!”
3. The Old Ways
Synopsis: Cristina, a journalist of Mexican origin, travels to her ancestral home in Veracruz to investigate a story of sorcery and healing. There, she is kidnapped by a group of locals who claim she’s the devil incarnated.
Why you should watch: The Old Ways shines because you don’t know if what this young woman is being told is true. You have to wait with her and see. Along the way, you feel her pain, confusion, and eventual growth. She goes through a character arc like you’ve never seen before. Also, it’s nice to see a non-stereotypical Latine horror movie.
4. As Above So Below
Synopsis: A thriller centered on two archaeologists in search of a lost treasure in the catacombs below Paris.
Why you should watch: As someone who isn’t religious at all, As Above So Below didn’t really turn me off. If anything it led me on a research spiral to learn more about the catacombs below Paris. If anything, I love a movie that makes me curious and goes for that uncomfortable feeling when you know there’s something in the dark but you can’t see it.
5. Hush
Synopsis: A woman’s retreat from society is shattered by a masked psychotic killer who appears at her window one night. He takes advantage of the fact that she lost her hearing as a teenager to pursue her. Little does he know that this is her home and she will do whatever she has to protect it.
Why you should watch: Personally I’ll watch anything with Kate Siegel in it. So when I stumbled across Hush I hit play and just went with the journey. Siegel does an excellent job at showing that her character is capable AF and WILL take down this intruder in her life that thinks of her as nothing more than “prey.”
