Henry Cavill is putting the past behind him with his move to the Warhammer 40,000 series.
It all started with the unprecedented news that Cavill was leaving The Witcher and being replaced by Liam Hemsworth. As expected, the internet blew up. Many didn’t want this sudden change and others were adamant that Hemsworth couldn’t carry the series. That shifted into anger when rumors started swirling that Cavill decided to leave the project due to the “disrespect” that the series was getting from the people responsible for writing the series in the first place.
Cavill’s appearance in Black Adam was seen as his next move, putting The Witcher firmly behind him instead of doing both. Then it was all thrown to hell when James Gunn, who is forging a new direction at DC, gave Cavill the news that Superman was a no-go. And while Gunn tried to make it seem like it was a hunky-dory meeting born out of being “big fans” of Cavill in a tweet and how they still have “exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
Cavill set a different tone with his response while still being a gentleman about it.
Now, the time has come to move on to bigger and better things for Cavill. And for him, that’s a Warhammer 40,000 series for Amazon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming giant is in the process of closing the rights to the miniature war game. And that Cavill will star in and executive produce the series adaptation.
“It’s great news and we’re absolutely thrilled; we’re working with a fantastic triumvirate in Henry, Vertigo, and Amazon. Henry’s well-known love of Warhammer 40,000—and his passion as a world-builder and storyteller—will serve us all well in the coming years. Finally, Warhammer will make it to the screen as the fans have hoped, and as they deserve. Exciting times!” said Andy Smillie, creative director of Games Workshop.
And from Cavill’s post on Instagram, he’s just as excited to take on this project. He said, “For 30 years I have dreamt of seeing a Warhammer universe in live action. Now, after 22 years of experience in this industry, I finally feel that I have the skill set and experience to guide a Warhammer Cinematic Universe into life.”
Personally, I have zero idea what Warhammer 40,000 is besides sometime in the future and reminiscent of Dungeons & Dragons. But with Henry Cavill backing it (and the obvious passion he has for it) and Amazon bringing it to life, I’m absolutely going to watch.
