Have to be honest, I am still not set on Not Dead Yet, but I am also very intrigued by what is happening in this show. The second episode of the series wasn’t great, but it also wasn’t bad. Not to say the first episode was bad either.
What I think that we’re dealing with here is a show that is trying to do a lot in a short period of time and it seems like too much. It feels like we’re just supposed to dive right in, but we also are like, ummm… wait, what?
We know that in this episode, time has passed, but to be honest, really quite confused as to how much. We see Nell with a bunch of different ghosts and quite tired because they keep talking to her. I don’t know how it is she sleeps or deals with that amount of judgement, because all of these ghosts seem quite judgmental.

At work, Sam is doing everything she can to balance Lexi and Nell. They both seem to want all of Sam’s attention and Sam really just wants everyone to get along. I think Nell is really trying, but she still doesn’t get that she left and things are going to change, just like she changed.
Nell has regrets, but if we’re being honest, she’s got to deal with those things. She has to find herself and she has to stop living in the past.
While the show has some deep moments, it also leaves me wondering who thought somethings were funny. There’s an intern that is so forgettable that I can’t remember his name, but there’s apparently some competition between him and Nell. He thinks that Nell is an intern and she thinks he’s annoying. Forgettable intern dude who sweats over butter doesn’t hold up in the show.
Nell is trying to be everything but the writer of obituaries, so on the advice of her latest ghost she decides to become a tiger. It’s self help jargon, from someone who needed all the self help themselves. You just knew that this wasn’t going to end well. Not even close.
She’s guiding Nell down a wrong path, telling her to write the article that she shouldn’t be writing. Granted, it’s good for Nell to get back into the swing of things, but also like Sam has told her, she needs to take steps to get there.
One of those things being not taken seriously is what her current job is. Writing obituaries.

Telling someones story is one of the most important things that you can do – in my opinion. There is always a story to tell and hey, it means something. It means something to the people that they left behind and the people that they affected.
Do I understand that for Nell, she wants to be the investigative reporter she once was? Yes. I get it. But I also am like, why is it that you would want to go back to the way things were instead of moving forward. I think it’s important to move forward and realize that you can’t recapture the past. But what you can do is make a new future.
Nell writes an investigative article and gets the intern to upload it, getting herself in trouble. I do have to say that maybe it was worth it, because she needed to be reminded of where she is and why she’s going through things. But she also needs to be reminded of the difference that she can and is making. I love that Sam saves her from Lexi’s wrath, but I also think that it’s important that Nell starts to learn to stand on her own two feet.
While I would love to have heard the obituary – cause I am wondering how she wrote something nice about her ghost who was a pain in the ass – I was fine without it. Why? Because towards the end I saw Nell start to embrace who she is and what she does, I was like okay – here’s hoping that we’re going to get some funny moving forward.

The show has so much potential that I truly believe in it. And hey, I would be the first to criticize anything. But sometimes what we need to do is get through the setup of the world in order to get to the growth of it.
Not Dead Yet airs on ABC.
