Finally an episode that I like and has something going on that makes sense. Something that moves the story forward and doesn’t feel like it’s 30 minutes of bad ideas and Santa being… well less than Santa. Finally.
Look, after this season, I have learned not to expect much from the show this season. And that’s not me trying to be a dick. It’s me being real.
I am fully aware that I should be able to separate myself from a television show and know that this isn’t one. I think, like I have said, that my issue is knowing that kids will watch this show and think that Santa is just wrong and sexist. For me, that’s a hard thing to swallow, because again… kids.
This episode has us dealing with Cal and his Santa abilities, Sandra turning The Easter Bunny into a literal bunny, and Noel about to have a menty b because of all that is happening.
But honestly, the best part of this episode was Sandra finally getting the attention and support that she needs from her Mama. We’ll get there though.
In the episode the elves are still freaking out of Magnus Antas, after they pick up on Santa magic on earth. Now, I love that their minds went there, but one has to wonder why it is that no one thought to ask Cal about the vest and make sure he had it. One also has to wonder why they didn’t go tell Santa.
But I guess that’s their fear of the Mad Santa.
But on earth, the Mad Santa is using his magic to transform the Christmas theme park he’s at. He’s not doing it for good reasons – he wants to get Santa’s attention so that he can make it back to the North Pole.
Only, like for that to happen isn’t someone gonna have to tell Santa that there is Santa magic on earth? Asking for a friend.
But, the answer is kinda no. It’s no because Santa and Cal are heading to earth to deliver stuff for the Easter Bunny.
Before they go to deliver, Mrs. Claus and Sandra, are tasked with finding the Easter Bunny’s basket of tricks. The two bond while on this adventure and Mrs. Claus helps her find her way through the anger and disappointment she feels in herself.
Sandra is being way hard on herself for everything. She’s having a hard time accepting who she is and dealing with how she is. I think that is part of what I loved about this episode – how in this happening, Mrs. Claus figures out the best way to be there for her daughter and show her daughter that she needs to accept who she is, because her magic is not a bad thing.
Her magic is part of what makes her amazing. Seeing a positive relationship between the two is good.
Sandman has come to check on Cal and see how he’s doing. We all know that Cal isn’t doing well at his training and so Santa and Cal try to trick Sandman. In conjunction with the elves, they knock him out and when he wakes up and are able to manipulate Sandman to believing he saw everything.
But he didn’t.
So as Santa and Cal set out, Santa decides to be a good Dad and try to help Cal with his broken heart. While they are doing this, Mrs. Claus is told what is happening and why Santa magic is on earth. Yet still, no one is talking about the vest.
Why is no one asking or thinking about the vest?
She heads to save the day, but the two Santas end up coming face to face. Their meeting is kinda epic and kinda meh. It’s the same way that this whole season has been. That’s kinda disappointing, because I want more.
I want to feel something for this show besides disdain. And I know that a lot of people have told me that this show is for adults. I don’t think that’s the case. I do think that when we’re dealing with things for kids – and this franchise has to honor the origin.
The biggest thing missing for me in this episode is that Cal didn’t get the same support from his Dad that Sandra gets from her Mom. Cal is suffering – because he’s got his first heartbreak. He needs his Dad.
And seeing Santa in his own body – Scott Calvin – I felt like we’re seeing the symbolism of a father, so why didn’t he get the talk? Yes, he gave the support of taking him to Riley’s neighborhood and telling him to go talk to her. However, we don’t get a conversation and there need to be one between the two.
So here we are. What will happen next? Hopefully some action and hopefully it makes this show better.
Because this season is missing it for me.
