Well, after getting torn apart for using “profanity” in another article, I am going to try to behave here. But like many things in 2024, I will probably fail at that and I have no regrets. After all, life is too short, and hey, we all express ourselves differently and we all have different points of view.
I may express mine “colorfully.”
Now why am I telling you this? Well, that’s because one thing that I am pretty sure I am going to be very “colorful” about is One Day. I am going to be very “colorful” because this book is one of my favorite books of all time.
If you aren’t familiar with One Day by David Nicholls, I am telling you that it’s a book that you should read. It will move you and it will make you think a lot about the days that define you and the days that change you.
One Day tells the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew who, on 15th July 1988, the night of their graduation, speak for the very first time. The next morning, they go their separate ways but where will they be on this one ordinary day the next year, and the year after that, and every year that follows?
Each episode finds Dex and Em, one year older, on this one particular date, as they grow and change, move together and apart, and experience joy and heartbreak. One Day is a decades-spanning love story, based on the worldwide bestseller by David Nicholls.
Now Netflix has released the trailer for the series – because yes, it’s right around the corner. I am f*cking excited.
That trailer gives me chills. Now, don’t get me wrong, the movie was amazing and I LOVED it. Normally I am against any sort of remake because I feel like we should respect the original – ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS AMAZING. However, for some reason (the trailer that was released being the biggest part) I am okay with this one. Still hesitant, but okay with it.
Now, if you’ve been around Fangirlish for a while, you know that from time to time, we get our inner TGIF on and we respect the days of yonder, where television was a learning lesson at all times.
And here – watching this trailer – we’re going to respect that and return to Life Lessons from Trailers to discuss all the things that we should/could learn. Now, granted, life lessons should come from real life, but the truth is, a lot of us learn from movies and TV nowadays.
So here we are. We’re learning.
Normally, I would have a huge list of lessons because I am that good at pulling a lesson out of everything. But here – with this – I have one lesson.
Yes, one. Don’t judge me – I could pull a lot more, but here I am, only pulling the one that I think is the most important. And what is that?
ALWAYS BE HONEST WITH YOUR FEELINGS.
Ya, that was hard to write, because I don’t really like the possibility of having to do that. I don’t like that because vulnerability is really fucking scary. Vulnerability feels overwhelming.
But if you don’t express your feelings, where will you be? You may be okay, but you may be filled with regret. The truth is you never know. But “one day” do you want to live your life with regret?
Methinks not. I sure as f*ck don’t.
One Day stars Ambika Mod, Leo Woodall, Essie Davis, Tim McInnerny, Amber Grappy, Jonny Weldon, Eleanor Tomlinson, Joely Richardson, and Toby Stephens.
