Ready, Set, Love 1×06 “Say I Do” saw our favorites escape The Farm, betrayals were revealed, and we got definite proof that Bovey is simply the best. They did this all while staying true to what the show is, a surreal dystopian adventure or like a fanfiction labeled “crack treated seriously.” Because I truly feel like this show in general has delighted me but also made me realize that Hollywood is not the standard. Hollywood is just an example. Because this show was giving major The Bachelor meets The Hunger Games vibes. But it was unapologetically itself and made me really curious about what Thai dramas have to offer across the board. Because we got our happily ever after. Well, for some. And it happened in an unexpectedly fun way.
Before we dive into the betrayal, let’s talk Day and Son. I truly didn’t think that they would end up living a cute little hippie life with their own son and in a hidden location with the rebellion. It’s giving Katniss ending up in the destroyed and hidden District 13. Except instead of a bunker underground, Day and Son are living a happy life in a beautiful valley with tons of flowers and new hairstyles. And good for them. Of course, it was revealed that Kwan found out where they are with the best HD photos I’ve ever seen from surveillance. But Day and Son chose each other while keeping true to who they are. And that matters more in the long run because I know that if a season 2 happens, they’re going to make it through. They’re going to survive. And they’ll do it in the most loving, ridiculous, and charming way possible.
Then there’s the betrayal. I was ready to drag Almond across the coals for his betrayal. I had a feeling that he wasn’t on their side in the previous episode. And I was right. He wanted to stay at The Farm. But when the moment came and they were escaping, it was sadder than expected. Valentine revealed that she was Almond’s sister and basically pleaded with him to come. In that moment I wanted Almond to go. But I think Ready, Set, Love 1×06 did a really good job at showing the fear Almond had of something new. And I felt like I deflated completely as a viewer and came to understand him. I hate new things and as much as I think I would do the right thing when it happens, who knows? Who actually knows what they would do in that situation until it happens to them? Because us the viewer would be screaming at the screen to go because that’s your family. But family is more than blood. If we see season 2 of Ready, Set, Love, I truly hope we see more of Almond and what he said when they were interrogating him.
The supporting cast of characters also had some really great moments in “Say I Do.” We had Bovey protecting Chanel in the most dramatic scene I have watched in a really long time. And I love the comedic timing of Ready, Set, Love where the camera panned over and Day was just watching this pivotal and emotional scene like she was us aka the viewer. Even afterwards, when Chanel picked Max, Bovey showed herself to be the true MVP by cheering on her friend. I also really love that Paper got his happy ending and got to kiss the boy. He’s free to make his own choice. The same thing goes for the head gamekeeper and her wife. Both of them get to choose how they raise their child and actually be there for his life in a way that I wish Almond, Paper, and Son had.
There is one thing I didn’t like. Well two. The time jump was too big. And I feel like I was robbed of those years. But that goes to show you that I’ve become endeared to Ready, Set, Love. I wanted to see those moments where Day and Son chose to be married for themselves or when they found out that she was pregnant. I wanted to see those moments. In addition, I know that the show found balance between crazy storytelling and a dystopian hellscape, but I really didn’t want to think about Kwan and how she would come back into the picture. It brings something ominous to this seemingly happy ending. But it also drops clues as to the possibility of season 2 and piques my interest as to why she’s interested in that mysterious hooded man. Whatever may come, just make sure to give me the crazy hijinks while slathering on The Hunger Games vibes. Oh and don’t forget the romance.
