In “big sigh of relief news,” For All Mankind has (finally!) officially been renewed for Season 5. Nobody likes a long wait for this kind of announcement, and this one took forever. Or, at least, it felt like it. Now, we just need to make sure that all the happy endings from the of Season 4 finale stay happy. With this series and with the volatile nature of space — not to mention international politics and just…life in general — that is not always a given. In fact, it’s usually the opposite. See also: Shane, Deke, Gordo, Tracy, Molly, Karen, Kuz, Sergei…do we need to continue?
Side note: As always, we’re going on the record with our “not Dani. Don’t even try it” approach to character deaths. But with Krys Marshall working on another project, will the timing even allow us to see her at all? Do we even want to see Dani again if it means risking it all? (That last one is impossible to answer, for what it’s worth.)
Anyway.
Despite knowing the dangers that probably await us, our excitement — and our curiosity to explore more — outweigh our fears. And we have so many questions we need answered. Like, what does the situation on Mars look like after the big labor uprising that sparked major international tensions? How did sabotaging the mission to bring Goldilocks to Earth affect global economies and international relations? Not to mention, what happens to…well, everyone, really? We’re sure whatever we think the answers are, or should be, this series will find another, better story.
For All Mankind spinoff news
But that’s not all! Apple TV+ basically said, “you can have a spinoff. As a treat.” And it’s taking us back to the very beginning. They’re calling it Star City, which is a name that ought to be familiar to all For All Mankind viewers by now. And, according to the press release, the new series is “a propulsive paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race – when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.”
We can’t wait to learn more about the other side of the story we (think) we know so well. At the same time…maybe we’re just kind of hoping some characters whose stories are complete, thus making it mostly impossible for them to show up in For All Mankind Season 5 in any meaningful kind of way without something tragic happening, will make an appearance? Imagine seeing Gordo (Michael Dorman) and Tracy’s (Sarah Jones) sacrifice through Russian eyes, for example. Or…oof. What about the entire Sergei/Margo thing? And do they have anything similar to “hi, Bob” over there? Would we even want them to?
How will every character we’ve come to know and love look through a completely different lens — assuming the Soviets notice them at all — and who else might we meet along the way? Well, we’ll be tuning in to find out. After all, we’ve made no mystery of our love for this alternate history, so we 100% plan to be seated for both the spinoff and Season 5.
