Sad news, Sprina fans. Nicholas Alexander Chavez will not return to General Hospital to reprise his role as Spencer Cassadine. Since January 31st of this year, Spencer Cassadine has been presumed dead as Chavez films the Ryan Murphy project Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
Last June, after he was cast in the Netflix project, General Hospital reps released a statement expressing their support for Nicholas’s new endeavor and their anticipation for his return once the project concluded. This statement initially reassured fans that Chavez was only on temporary leave. However, on March 29th, viewers noticed that his name had been removed from the GH credits, sparking widespread speculation about his status.
As a fan myself, I, too, wondered just what this all meant. Because even with him off the credits, that did not necessarily mean he was done with the show. It could have been that his status just changed to recurring. This was wishful thinking because Chavez is a phenomenal actor, so I had suspicions that once he left to do Murphy’s project, he would not return to GH. Of course, as an avid Sprina (Spencer + Trina) fan, this was a sad reality to accept. On April 25th, TVLine released an update on Chavez’s status when they reported multiple sources indicated that he would not be returning.
On May 3rd, after multiple weeks of speculation, Chavez himself finally took to “X,” formerly known as Twitter, to release a statement on his status at General Hospital:
“I’m so appreciative of the opportunity that GH gave me, and I wouldn’t be as busy as I am professionally if it weren’t for the talented producers, writers, directors, and fellow actors. Frank Valentini is a mentor and a friend, and we’ve had some pretty extensive conversations about my future on the show. While there are no current plans for me to return, we are still talking very openly about future possibilities for Spencer in Port Charles.”
Chavez ended his statement by saying a special thank you to the Sprina fanbase which has supported him since he stepped into the role of Spencer Cassadine in July of 2021.:
“Beyond the people I’ve already mentioned, I want to take some time to thank and honor the GH fan base… especially the Sprina fans… who must be THE most loyal and kind fan base in the universe of entertainment. Words fail to show the depth of my gratitude, thank you, I love you all very, very much.”
One thing of note in Chavez’s statement was that he mentioned still speaking to Executive Producer Frank Valentini about “Future possibilities for Spencer in Port Charles.” We have no idea exactly what this means. Is Chavez leaving the door open for a possible return later on down the line? We sure would like to know. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. But, at the risk of sounding like a negative Nancy, I won’t hold my breath. With the Netflix Upfronts happening in a few weeks, I’m sure Chavez’s performance in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will generate a lot of buzz which could ultimately lead to him receiving even more opportunities if he hasn’t already.
Valentini also provided a statement regarding Chavez’s status via Soap Opera Digest “When we hired Nicholas four years ago, I knew he had something special. Not only is he a very talented actor, but he is also a good person and dear friend. While we are very sad to see him go, we are very proud of him and look forward to watching his next act. We wish him all the best.”
On this, we agree. Chavez is a very talented actor and a good person. We know he’s going to do great things. What all of this now means for the status of Sprina remains to be seen. Tabyana Ali, the other half of the popular ship, had this to say about her leading man’s departure via Soap Opera Digest: “It was great creating Sprina together with him. I want the best for him, and all of his endeavors and I hope that we will get the chance to work together again someday. I also want to show my gratitude to Sprina Nation as well.”
One thing we know for certain is that Spencer and Trina’s love story is just beginning and is nowhere near finished. Despite Chavez’s departure, Ali deserves for the love story of Trina and Spencer to continue. Especially considering how much time General Hospital wasted by not allowing the relationship to fully flourish (that’s a conversation for a different day). We are going to miss the magic that both she and Chavez delivered on our screens, but we support him in his future endeavors and look forward to seeing him in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story later this year.
