We’ve finally got something to look forward to in The Serpent Queen, because bat s*** cray Queen Elizabeth has arrived. Now, I didn’t know that I would be such a fan of Minnie Driver’s, but here we are and I am thinking praise be for her. Her presence as Queen Elizabeth is giving some spice (not the sexy kind) to this show.
All is in chaos in France. Catherine is off in Italy, as we know, and that means that France is under the guidance of the actual King. About time he stood up, but at the same point, is that a good thing? France is going crazy over the fire at the Protestant church. So effectively France is in upheaval because of François. Protestants are mad and rightfully so. There is effectively the beginnings of a holy war going on.
And we all know that’s not going to end well at all. Okay, well we know if we know history and also you know, if you watch television at all. Chaos always comes. Can’t promise any resolution though.
Montmorency is trying to talk Sister Edith (that’s what the Protestants are calling her and you know, we’re just gonna follow suit). Sister Edith ain’t hearing none of it. She doesn’t want to and one can’t blame her for not wanting revenge. François is being protected by the king and they all want his prosecuted. TBH, so do we. Imagine the drama. Montmorency is listening and well we’re on her side for François being prosecuted. But if he is, then well, his Mama needs to be also. She effectively caused all this by blackmailing her son.
Mama did not know best.
Meanwhile, the Protestants got people everywhere. Anjou, well rumors are going everywhere about him and when him and his entourage run into them – you know chaos is there. Someone throws mud at Anjou and he’s MAD. He wants his honor back and tries to talk to his big bro about revenge. King is like leave them alone, but Anjou isn’t hearing that. He wants to slit the throat of 12 random protestants.
The thing that annoys me about this show is how entitled that Catherines kids are. Royalty is really into feeling themselves and it’s quite over the top. Now, Catherine has raised them that way and it’s all sorts of gross. Anjou, I get that he’s embarrassed, but just killing people for that – naaa, I am good. But what I did love is that the king wasn’t having his temper tantrum and finally mad his status a thing. He made his brother follow protocol.
The bad thing about this is that in doing that, he’s furthered Anjou’s anger. Anjou wants the peasants to fear them. He’s just not getting the politics.
Diane is finally back at court and I didn’t realize how much I missed her. Yes, fully hate her, but also think that sometimes its the people you hate in a television show that make the show great. Now, the thing is, I kinda hate everyone in this show, but maybe that’s what makes it addicting.
Diane seems changed, but who knows. She’s trying to calm Anjou, but I also think that in her own way, she’s manipulating her way back into court. If Catherines kids love having her back, do we really think that they are going to be like yes, please go back to captivity? I don’t think so.
Diane wants Anjou to pull himself together, but he’s good. He doesn’t want to do that. He wants revenge. Have to admire the fact that she’s trying. Isn’t that half the battle?
In Italy, Catherine’s met a man that she likes. She needs to be careful though, cause that man turns out to be her bro. Yes, her Daddy was out there having a mistress and had a son. He gave his son his last name, which 100% can give him props for. Catherine is kinda in a state of shock when she finds out what’s happening. See, in order to get the money that she came there for, she’s gotta allow him to come to France and oversee the money.
Must suck to be a Queen and your bro – that you just met – is in charge of you. Now, I find it funny, because karma needs to kick Catherine in the backside, but also, here we are. She wants a palace, she’s gotta deal with her bro – Duke of Florence, Alessandro de’ Medici.
Back in England, we see Mary, Queen of Scots again and she’s still annoying. She’s still locked up in that tower, and Cray Queen (that’s what we’re calling Elizabeth) acts like she’s concerned, but she isn’t. She wants info from Mary. After being locked in a tower for five years, one could not blame Mary for spilling whatever info she has. Like, if I was her, I would do and say whatever to get out of there.
And hey, Mary talks. She gives the info that Cray Queen wants. What I loved was that when the Cray Queen walked out, she basically showed her true colors. She was like when the time is copasetic, her heads coming off. Respect for that honesty.
Will put respect on Elizabeths name for a second and say that she seems to be the only Queen here that knows how to play the game. Maybe it’s because she has no allegiance to anyone but herself, but I am actually terrified of her. Well both terrified and kinda like YASSS QUEEN. That’s just how great that Minnie Driver is playing her.
Cray Queen wants an advantage in this possible trade deal with France. She wants to stir the pot and make the Protestants revolt more.
While I can’t say that The Serpent Queen follows the actual historical timeline, I do think that is part of the beauty of this show. It gives no f**ks and is more focused on making it entertaining than anything. I do think that it is very important that people learn history, but if you are looking for that to be a TV show – well reevaluate.
Anjou’s back out with his friends, riding through the woods, and this is where it all gets chaotic, but also sooo offensive. Anjou’s sexuality is consistently called out by people – from Diane to the Protestants, and I do think that the way that the show is doing it – it’s not being so sensitive. I do think that they are trying, but I am just having issues with the way that they are treating their queer characters. And I am wanting to know why it is that the queer characters are the ones committing murder this season? I just have so many issues with this.
Anjou and company run into Protestants who tell him that he needs to be baptized for his “sins” and he agrees. Only he snaps and drowns the person baptizing him – effectively starting war. See, someone throws a rock, hitting Hercules, and he’s bleeding on the ground. The dude with the really bad haircut then kills that guy and there’s just blood. And issues. So many issues.
The Serpent Queen is really trying and mad respect for that. But this episode wasn’t my fave, because it just felt.. insensitive and I wondered, isn’t anyone in production seeing the potential problems here?
