From the mind of Stephen King comes The Monkey. Starring Theo James, the movie tells the story of twin brothers Bill and Hal. After finding their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths start. According to IMDb, they throw away the story and try to move on with their lives. But as you know, things never are that simple. And even if they’ve grown apart and moved past these events, the past never stays there.
In the teaser trailer we hear ominous carnival music play before starting to twist upon itself and turning ominous. A monkey with a drum can be seen as blood splatters appear alongside a creepy open mouth. And that’s all interspersed with the revelations that this is going to be produced by James Wan while naming his various successes in the horror genre like Insidious and M3GAN. But he’s not alone as Longlegs writer Osgood Perkins is joining the fray as director.
But the real startling moment of The Monkey trailer comes when James appears, standing in front of a bloodied curtain as he himself is drenched in red from head to toe. He’s shaking and clearly surprised by something we can’t see. He stars alongside other heavy hitters like Tatiana Maslany and Elijah Wood. And in the OG short story, the cause of all this death and destruction was due to a cursed toy monkey who every time he clapped him cymbals, one of Hal’s family members would die.
