The first half of season four of Emily in Paris felt really different than the second half. The season finale of felt different than everything else and for a second, I had to think about what that meant. Did I love it? Did I hate it? TBH, I wasn’t sure the first time I watched it.
Final decision, I loved it.
I think that a lot of times in life we need to reinvent ourselves and so does a television show. Changing, wrapping up story lines, introducing new characters, new places… it all makes sense. But there is also a joy in seeing people grow and change.
I hate change. Comfort is my strong suit. But the thing about Emily in Paris, even in it’s massive delulu state at times, it really means something to the people that watch it. It allows a way to just dream and remember that dreaming and living can go hand in hand,
Episode 10 of Emily In Paris felt like a movie. Maybe like I was watching Emily have her own Lizzie McGuire moment. Only her doppleganger was herself and she got to live a different life. But it felt so natural.
It felt so Emily.
But Emily wasn’t the only person growing in this episode. There was a lot of strong women in this episode – a lot of women finding their strength and their voice. Strong women – may we know them, may we be them, may we admire them. I know that I admire the ones in Emily In Paris.

HOW CAN YOU BE HUNGRY
Sylvie leaves destruction in her path most of the time. She’s so focused on work and she’s so confused in her personal life. While I have never understood her and Laurent’s open relationship, I think that it’s part of what has made her who she is. Well at least who she projects herself as.
She’s not thinking when she shows up in Rome and ruins things between Emily and Marcello. I think that part of it is all of the things going on at home – Laurent being gone, Geneiveve and her craziness, trying to keep a business a float. Then there is the competition with JVMA and her issues with them.
For a moment, as Emily and Sylvie are talking, you can see the way that they’ve both changed each other. It’s kinda weird, because taking Sylvie out of Paris seemed to be what we needed to see this different side of her.
Now, what I loved the most was seeing Emily find her voice and really just tell it like it was time she told Sylvie that she crossed a line. Emily has learned a lot about herself from Sylvie. I don’t think any of us expected that in that, she’d learn that standing up for herself would be one of the most important things that she could do.
It may also be one of the most important things that Sylvie could hear.

THE BETRAYAL AND BREAKUP
Solitano. That’s Marcello’s home and where he was supposed to be bringing Emily. She knows that he’ll be there and so she decides to go and find him.
There is nothing like a drive through the Italian countryside to give a best friends moment. Mindy and Nico have broken up and she calls her bestie. Nico crossed so many lines, if Mindy forgives him, I am gonna be pissed.
In order for Nico to get his way, he made sure that she would get disqualified from Eurovision. I guess now we know why it was that we didn’t focus on it a lot. Legitimately I stood up and screamed at the television, so mad that Nico had done this to Mindy. Mindy’s heart break takes center stage and seeing it, I admit that I wanted to crawl into the television and hug her.
I was kinda glad that she invited herself to Rome. Mindy needs to get out of Paris and Emily may not realize it, but she is going to need Mindy.

SOLITANO AND ITS FEEL
When I go back to Italy, I am going to need to take a trip to Solitano. Talk about a beautiful place.
A special place.
I have to admire that Emily has made her way there to try and find Marcello. Look, I like Marcello, A LOT. But I do not understand the way that he is acting. If he care about Emily as much as he claims to, why is it that he doubts in her and she has to keep proving who she is.
He’s not had to do that.
I guess that there are a lot of people that have used him in his past? But sir, Emily did not know who you were until Sylvie told her. You were just some hot dude who saved her. Get it together. Also tell us who hurt you so we can have a discussion with them.
It’s kinda crazy how Marcello changes his mind every five seconds on Emily and also kind of annoying. Like she’s there for you – she really, really likes you. But you want to shut her down when you are the one who is always asking her questions or bringing up work.
Work and Emily do go hand in hand. But, I do genuinely believe that for her, it’s because she wants to be there for the people that she loves and cares about. So after the most amazing day and feeling all the love that happens in Solitano, it’s not shocking that Emily wants to save Marcello and his family from JVMA.
But of course, Marcello shuts her down and sends her packing the moment she asks if they would meet with her company.

THE PROFESSOR AND SYLVIE
There is something that keeps drawing Sylvie back to Rome and we get to see a second of it. Hello hot director dude, I love you. There are very few times in this show that I feel that Sylvie has truly been at ease. But, here we are and she’s definitely found her calm.
You don’t see Sylvie open up a lot, but she does with him. It turns out that Sylvie had once come to Rome to study film and this dude is the only person that Laurent has ever been jealous of. I can see why, because for Sylvie, this man makes her feel things that she hasn’t felt with anyone else.
I love a moment with Sylvie and seeing her letting her guard down. For this man, she does. Stan this.

ITALIAN ROOM SERVICE
I am so glad that Mindy made her way to Rome and is there when Emily gets back. The two head out to talk and grab some gelato.
I think we can all relate to Mindy when we see her doubting herself and her breakup with Nico. She loves him. A LOT. But she’s having to bend all the time to be there for him and he wants her to be someone she’s not. I loved Emily being this supportive friend to Mindy and being there for her.
What I definitely loved was the next moments where Mindy is inspired and she performs a song that she’s been writing. It ends up being called Beautiful Ruins (thats a next day thing) but just listening to the song, I cried. Like rewound it 4 times and cried.
For the first time, I can understand Mindy really does love Nico and has learned things from their relationship that she hasn’t gotten anywhere else. I can see that even though she doesn’t like his attempts to control her, in her heart, she just wants to be with him. She also realizes that even though you love someone and want to be with them, it may not be the best idea.
But for real, I need to be able to buy that song. Get on it Netflix.

MORNING WAKE UPS
Emily and Mindy are fast asleep when Emily gets a phone call that she doesn’t realize is about to change everything. That is the best way for things to change – when you don’t know that it’s going to happen, but you can look back and see the little moments that are going to change everything.
Marcello and his Mom are willing to meet with Emily and Sylvie. She had overheard what Emily told Marcello and is willing to hear more. It leads Emily to saying that they do have an office in Rome. It leads to Sylvie finding one to use and Luc and Julien heading to Rome to help.
I do love Marcello and I do think that he’s going to be great for Emily. I think that whatever or whomever hurt him makes him really need some therapy. He’s way grumpy all the time, especially over business. Maybe he is so protective because it is so personal to him and he’s not sure how to react to anyone trying to help him change anything.
But that’s part of why I do like him – because as much as he’s changing Emily’s life, she is changing him. There is nothing better than people that can grow and learn together. They challenge each other in the best ways and I think that doing that makes their relationship even more beautiful.
Watching them grow is going to be a good thing. Especially because Marcello and his Mom gave Emily and co – 6 months to work on their brand. This is going to be exciting.
Mindy has things happening too. When she wakes up, the video of her singing has blown up. Chinese Pop Star wants her to come and judge, as well as perform. She’s got her redemption. I was sooo happy for her.
Life is turning around.

THE STAR
Why does Genevieve have to be the one to get the news that Gabriel is going to get a Michelin star? Hate this for us.
Yes, yes – I am hard on her, but I feel like she is manipulating everything and that is very depressing. We all deserve better.
When she gets the call, she runs to Gabriel’s restaurant to tell him. He of course, doubts it after everything that happened with Luc’s cray cray girlfriend. But Genevieve is able to convince him that it’s real. And his first words – “Where is Emily? She should be the one telling me this?”
Sorry dude, you screwed that up – Emily is in Rome.
I am happy for Gabriel getting his star, but he needs to let Emily live. Celebrate your star sir and let Emily celebrate her wins.
One thing that I did love was that he told Genevieve that they are just friends. She’s legit throwing herself at him and it is very sad. I do feel bad for her, because it’s always hard to deal with stuff like that. Rejection is hard.
Gabriel does win bonus points for calling Emily and telling her, and she wins points for returning his call and leaving a voice mail in French. Regardless of what happens, she wants to be friends. They are both trying. But she’s trying to be friends.
He is realizing his mistakes and decides to go after Emily. Alfie sir, I know that you have moved on (hopefully temporarily) but lets not encourage this. Let us all let Emily live.
Gabriel and Alfie have both let pride get in the way. I don’t think that disrupting Emily’s life is the way to go.

THE CELEBRATION
There is a party to celebrate everything happening in Rome. Sylvie gives Emily the recognition that she deserves, but Emily is still upset. She wishes that Marcello was there, and tells Sylvie that she just didn’t care. However, for Emily knows that she made the final decision to pitch to Marcello.
But Marcello does show up. He shows up because his Mom told him that Emily wanted nothing to do with the account. It was proof to him that she was there for him.
God, I love these two together (for now).
Remember how I talked about that phone call changing lives? Well we find out the next morning that to close the deal, they are opening an office in Rome and Emily is staying in Rome. Julien and Luc may not be thrilled with that, but Emily doesn’t bat an eye. It’s not permanent – it’s temporary.
Mindy says that when she gets back from China, she’s coming to Rome to be with Emily. She needs out of Paris. Which, if we’re being honest, the idea of Emily and Mindy in Paris sounds a lot of fun. I can’t wait to see the adventures.
Emilys temporary apartment is so cute. Loved so much to see Emily in Paris come full circle, and Emily take a picture out a window, just like she did when she got to Rome.
But we’re left with a cliffhanger.
We see Emily start to change her Instagram name, but never finish. We see Gabriel showing up and Emily and Mindy’s apartment, asking where Emily is. And we see Marcello show up to get Emily.
But in the biggest shocker, to me anyways, when Emily is leaving to go hang out with Marcello, she leaves her phone at the apartment. She’s ready to live her life and not see it through her phone.
Emily in Rome… I am so ready for this.
Season 4 of Emily in Paris is streaming now on Netflix.
Loved your synopsis of Emily Season 4. Finally a positive comment about Sylvie and Giancarlo – instead of suggesting that she’s using him to get back at Laurent. It was so good to see the tenderness in the way he interacts with her and the joy she exudes. Finally someone who does that for her – let’s hope the storyline doesn’t screw it up and try to use their relationship to create drama. As Emily once said to her “You deserve to be happy, Sylvie.”
Also agree that Marcello has a short fuse if things don’t go the way he wants them. Needs to mature if their relationship stands a chance. But that’s sure to be part of the drama in Season 5.
