Just because Stranger Things is coming to an end doesn’t mean that Millie Bobby Brown’s relationship with Netflix is coming to an end. At New York Comic Con 2024, Brown appeared to debut the first look at her upcoming action-adventure movie known as The Electric State.
Set in a retro-futuristic past (it’s the 90’s and it hurts they’re calling this retro) it tells the story of an orphaned teenager named Michelle (Brown) and her search for her younger brother Christopher after a failed rebellion by sentient robots. Joining her on this adventure across the American West is an eccentric drifter named Keats, played by Chris Pratt, and a “sweet but mysterious robot.”
But Cosmo isn’t just any mysterious robot. He’s apparently being controlled by Christopher himself. A Christopher that Michelle thought was long gone and dead. That’s when she decides to search for him, leading her on a grand adventure, and closer to the heartbreaking reality “that the forces behind Christopher’s disappearance are more sinister than they ever expected.”
The Electric State is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. It stars Brown, Pratt, and Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan. All three are sporting very 90’s hair. Jason Alexander, Giancarlo Esposito, Academy Award nominee Stanley Tucci, and Woody Norman round out the main cast. And Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, and Alan Tudyk lend their talents as the voices of the robots.
The film is based on the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag with a screenplay written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely. In the graphic novel, a runaway teenager and her small yellow toy robot travel through a strange American landscape where the ruins of gigantic battle drones litter the countryside. Within it’s pages there’s also remnants of high-tech consumerist society addicted to a virtual-reality system, which we see in the teaser trailer. And as they approach the edge of the continent, the world outside seems to unravel at an ever faster pace.
