In my first review for Skeleton Crew episodes 1 and 2 I lamented the fact that they took too long to get to Jude Law. I liked the kids, despite one of them annoying me greatly, and I looked forward to the upcoming adventure. In Skeleton Crew season 1 episode 3 “Coming of Age,” I feel like we might have overcorrected with too much of Jude law, which probably seems sacrilegious to people who really like this actor. But let me explain.
There’s a reason why Disney had Law as the main protagonist on posters for Skeleton Crew and in promotional material before the series came out. He’s a huge actor but he’s also really talented and beloved by many fans. So of course you’re going to put the heavy hitter in promotional material to attract viewers. And for those watching episode 1 and 2, things felt slow because you were waiting for the person you assumed was the main character of the show. But in watching episode 3, I now understand why the show took so long to introduce him. He’s simply a better actor than all of the kids combined.
Star Wars kept Law away from the center of the story to let the kids establish themselves. We needed to see who they were and what their motivations were on this grand adventure. Because as soon as Law stepped into the picture he overshadowed them so completely that I was like, “Wait, who are these kids? Give me more of Jude Law!” And a part of it isn’t the kid’s fault. He’s got a wealth of experience. But I also have to think about other child actors like Stranger Things season 1. They stood toe to toe with the likes of Winona Ryder. These kids can’t say the same thing. They disappear, almost entirely, when Law is on screen.

The presence of an acting titan doesn’t mean that I’m still not invested in these kids. I am. I want to know where they go and how they change. But another glaring problem with Skeleton Crew is that I now see their problems and flaws a little bit more. For one, KB is an Asian stereotype. She’s the tech girl with an edgy haircut that acts as second fiddle to the loud and brash one. KB is also meticulous, watchful, and suspicious of Law’s Jod Na Nawood. We’ve seen a character like her. Law appearing also made me realize that Wim is nothing more than a fanboy and Fern is nothing more than a bad girl. Even Neel can only go so far with being cute and snoring adorably. I need to know more about their values, hobbies, just something to get to know them as individuals to cheer for them.
Skeleton Crew season 1 episode 3 “Coming of Age,” continues building on a unique story that doesn’t continue flogging the nostalgia machine with the Skywalkers. That remains it’s strongest suit and a way to bring in new fans. Because of that, I’ll give the kids more time to impress me and space to grow. The wool will be pulled from their eyes. And when it does, I know they’re going to surprise me. Or I hope they do. You never truly know with Star Wars.
New episodes of Skeleton Crew drop Tuesdays at 9pm ET.
