Yes, yes – we know we should have watched this on time, when it came out in December. But here we are, talking about it and kicking off the new year with it. We were busy.
At the end of episode three of LAID, Ruby was getting kidnapped. Bag over head and pulled into a dark alley and all. It was a WTF moment, but one that instantly made me think that an ex wasn’t happy with her telling them that they were going to die. It makes the most sense to me.
And I wasn’t wrong.
Richie was not pleased with her dropping the news and then disappearing. So he forcefully took her and brought her to his apartment. Now, he wasn’t tying her up or anything. He just wanted answers.
Here’s the thing about Ruby – I think that she likes the attention. She likes people chasing after her and so Richie really believing her story and being invested in what she says – she’s all in.
As I make my way through all of these episodes, I can’t help but be enamored with Stephanie Hsu. The way that she brings Ruby to life – so outrageous and so relatable – I am here for it. She’s got that thing – you know what I mean. It’s that star quality that you can’t define – it’s just there. She’s really a star.
So we’re honored that she’s on our screens and that we get to watch her in a show like this.
When she leaves Richie’s – I kinda feel bad for her. I feel bad because she looks so distraught. She looks as though everything has been too much for her and it probably has. But when she gets home and runs into Zach – things get kind of worse.
She tells him that she wants to tell AJ and I never thought that I would find something in which I agree with Zach, but I do. Telling AJ is so that Ruby feels better, not for AJ. Now saying that, I do believe that Ruby should tell AJ. I don’t know – it is a touchy situation.
But that being said – I think that the way that the show explores friendship is on point. It’s relatable.
Back to the show – AJ doesn’t really want to hear anything at this point anyways. She’s so wrapped up in the board and telling Ruby who died. She wants to only talk about the board and it’s kinda really disturbing. And by kinda, I mean it is.
But how did so many people die overnight? Like there was a lot. It’s really disturbing to see how excited that AJ is over the entire thing. Ruby tries to call her out, kindly, but AJ isn’t hearing it. She only cares about why people are dying. She went as far as to set up google alerts and that’s how she’s keeping up with things.
But we will find out that Google isn’t always right.
For now though, I will just be in awe of Zosia Mamet. She’s so dead pan that I am really in awe of how she isn’t laughing at some of the lines that she has to deliver. It’s definitely not anything that is easy to do. Mamet steals scenes in anything that she is in and LAID is no different.
What I do enjoy about this show are all of the scenes with Isaac and Ruby. Seeing them both being these characters that feed off each other is a pleasant thing in the midst of all this chaos. Now, I think we can all establish that we hate his girlfriend and she deserves to get dumped – but here we are. I think that she’s gross and if he stays with her after how she acted when seeing him and Ruby act out The Greatest Showman.
Not cool, blondie.
The other thing to bother me during this episode was the call that Ruby made to AJ – to tell her about liking Isaac and AJ was like nope. I mean, OBVIOUSLY, it’s a nope for her right now, but like also – support on something other than true crime and the board AJ.
Ruby is distraught enough. She feels bad over everything happening. Let her have at least one good thing.
The good thing may be not what we expected it to be, but here we are and nothing is ever what it seems.
Something about the idea of Richie being dead really bothers Ruby. She goes to set up a memorial at work and the manager is pissed. He doesn’t know anything except that Richie didn’t show up and that leads Ruby to believing that he’s dead in his apartment.
This is where anyone would call the police for a wellness check. At least anyone that I know. But here we are and Ruby instead talks the landlord into letting her in to identify the body. She’s wild man. Like really wild.
There is no way on God’s green earth that I would have been like ok, let me in and see what’s happening here. No. Not if there could be a dead person there.
Luckily Richie isn’t dead – he’s instead seeing if he can pull off frosted tips. Spoiler Alert: no one can. It didn’t even work for Justin Timberlake. Lets all learn a lesson here.
While we’re not sure why death skipped Richie, I am sure that we will all be wondering that for awhile. This better not be like Lost where it’s all a dream. If that happens – we riot.
And by we – I mean me. Cause you know, that’s what I do.
LAID is streaming now on Peacock.
