Kate Hudson’s Isla Gordon is more than ready to make her debut as the new president of the Los Angeles Waves. Running Point, a new sports comedy series from Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen, premieres next month on Netflix. Ahead of its release, the streamer shared a trailer showing how Isla gets the job and what she’s up against. Despite complaints of nepotism and comments about her age, Isla is determined to prove that she is the right woman for the job.
“I’ve been eager to dive into something comedic with a team I admire, and this role offered a fresh challenge and was hilarious and engaging right from the start.“ The chance to work with people I respect and to bring a unique female perspective to a male-driven world was incredibly appealing,” Hudson told Netflix’s Tudum.

Kaling echoes that sentiment by saying, “I really love writing shows about ambitious women, whether they’re a 15-year-old girl in the Valley [Never Have I Ever] or the president of a basketball team. We wanted to ensure that audiences could see themselves in the characters’ struggles and triumphs.”
The show’s description teases a scandal forcing Isla’s brother out of the job. Running Point’s trailer puts that event into more context. Justin Theroux’s character appears to be involved in a car accident that leaves him (at least temporarily) hospitalized and unable to continue his job as president.
He passes the baton to his younger sister but doesn’t care that she started to doubt her capability at a young age because of their father. Isla’s other brothers – Ness (Scott MacArthur) and Sandy (Drew Tarver) – appear more enthusiastic about having Isla’s back, but they also work for the team. Sandy is the chief financial officer of the Waves, while Ness is the team’s general manager.

The Running Point trailer also introduces Brenda Song’s Ali Lee, the Waves’ chief of staff. She presses her ear to the hospital room’s door to overhear the news about Isla becoming the president of the Waves. She celebrates the news with her friend, who she has known since college, before delivering a less than gentle warning – “On behalf of all women, don’t ever make a mistake.” The trailer also shows Isla’s fiancé, Lev Levy (Max Greenfield), in her corner.
That’s right; Running Point’s cast is a “winning roster,” which is also something that Isla believes the Los Angeles Waves has. The series also stars Fabrizio Guido, Jay Ellis, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Roberto Sanchez, Uche Agada, and Dane DiLiegro. Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, showrunner David Stassen, Kate Hudson, Howard Klein (3 Arts Entertainment), Los Angeles Lakers president and co-owner Jeanie Buss, and Los Angeles Lakers manager of special projects Linda Rambis executive produce the series.
