The Sandman was one of the revelations after its premiere. The show left us completely speechless when it arrived on Netflix and we were all looking forward to season 2. However, the king of the dream world is about to end his reign and the timing is… curious. Ready?
Here we go!
The Sandman season 2 jumps directly to the end of the comics, following the “Season of Mists” storyline in which Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie) abdicates control of Hell and presents Morpheus, aka Dream (Tom Sturridge), with the key to its doors, causing many immortals to try to convince Morpheus to give them the key.
As you can see in the announcement released on The Sandman social media account, along with the key art of season 2 which they refer to as the “final season”, you can read a message from Allan Heinberg, showrunner of the series that reads:
“The series ‘The Sandman’ has always focused exclusively on the story of Dream, and in 2022 when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season. We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight loyal readers of the comics as well as fans of our show.”

So, it seems that ending the show after the season 2 was always the plan and, in fact, according to Variety, it’s something they had already thought about since season 2 was in the production phase, however, we are clear that this is not a coincidence. The Sandman is one of Netflix’s most successful series and, although it took a few months to be renewed after its premiere, its success in audiences throughout the world is undeniable.
Success means money for the studio and we think that there is no way that Netflix would pass up the possibility of earning millions of dollars by shortening the series in such a radical way – especially when the material to adapt is so extensive – if it were not for the fact that it has no other choice but to do so. And, for us, the reason is that several accusations of sexual misconduct against Neil Gaiman, the creator of the comics on which the show is based, have come to light.

While these accusations have had a greater impact in recent months due to the publication of some testimonies about them, the news came to light some time ago and since then, Gaiman has left Amazon’s upcoming final season of Good Omens, and development has stopped on a film based on his “The Graveyard Book” at Disney. More recently, Gaiman was dropped by Dark Horse, his former comic book publisher, and his musical “Coraline” was scrapped.
So, if you’re wondering what we think, we’re convinced that these accusations had a lot to do with the decision to give The Sandman a definitive ending and we think it’s the right decision.
The Sandman season 2 is coming to Netflix in 2025.
