We’re back! The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 ‘The Kiss’ deals with the aftermath of what happened in the previous episode…with a mixed result. The whole time we feel like it falls short and could have been much better than it ultimately is. Ready?
Here we go!
Unlikely Suspects in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 ‘The Kiss’

We want to say one thing: Mekia Cox is amazing. Although she has too few scenes in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 ‘The Kiss’ for our taste, she carries the weight of the episode on her back. And she is the best! That said, they’ve focused on placing Nyla as a suspect without even trying to do it right. The point is, there’s nothing against Nyla.
The fact that she knows about James “cheating” on her is just an assumption. As for James’ photo, it’s circumstantial at best. James interacts with all kinds of people, and many of them are in trouble with the law. That means nothing. Not to mention the undercover interrogation of Nyla without having gone through the proper legal channels.
As if that weren’t enough, since The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 ‘The Kiss’ goes out of its way to make us believe that they are treating Nyla as a suspect only to follow protocol and explore all possibilities, then let’s talk about how, if that were true, the team couldn’t even have taken on the case. Because if one of their own is a suspect, everyone is too emotionally involved to be impartial. And Angela, the main person in charge of the case, is the best friend of Nyla, the main suspect.
So it’s a no for us. This whole business of Nyla being a suspect in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 ‘The Kiss’ is tremendously forced and not organic at all. However, they spend twenty minutes on it when the episode could have been much better, and more dramatic, and Mekia could have demonstrated even more of her great talent if they had focused on finding James’ shooter — and showing his confession.
They could have also shown Nyla desperate to be on the streets but, at the same time, wanting to be with James when he wakes up, or James in danger in the operation. We would have even loved to see Nyla’s reaction to finding out about the kiss between James and Kylie from Nolan. In short, there were thousands of ways to have made the episode better. Instead, they chose to do the easiest thing. Thus, they opted for an episode that is good and entertaining but all the time leaves you with the feeling that it could have been better if the approach had been different.

Words Can Heal

Despite the above, we cannot deny that we really liked the last scene between Nolan and Nyla in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 9 ‘The Kiss’. On the show, everything happened too fast and they never had time for him to thank Nyla for everything. We were owed this scene years ago and here it is. We love how Nolan confessed to Nyla how much he appreciates and admires her. She is an example of a mother, wife, and police officer. And we couldn’t agree more with Nolan.
That last hug from Nyla… she is finally letting go of everything she has been holding back. And she really needed to hear that. Seeing James like that and everything about that kiss made her rethink all the things that happened leading up to that moment.
Nyla felt guilty for having had so many fights with James and for not spending much time with him and their family in the last few weeks. So she needed someone to remind her how amazing she was in every aspect of her life and that she did nothing wrong. We want to hug her!

- We like that Nyla believed James and that they were quick to address this issue. Good choice!
- Wesley did the right thing telling Nyla everything.
- We understand that in a situation like this Celina questions everything but she did the right thing by attending to Kylie first, she was more seriously ill.
- We’re glad that Kylie is still alive.
- Celina successfully closed her first case and we’re proud!
- Tim remembers every detail of everything he has experienced with Lucy. We love it!
- He never misses an opportunity to tell her how beautiful she is. And we melt.
- But the best thing is that Tim is there when Lucy needs support and encouragement as she feels that everything is happening is overwhelming her.
- Flirting is back for Chenford…and we think it’s wonderful that it’s with a competition. It’s their love language.
- All about that daughter and her mother’s caregiver. WTF?!
