The beauty of DOC is that they aren’t afraid to approach any subject and they aren’t afraid to pull you in to see that there is more out there than one point of view. Life can be confusing and it can be something that we don’t understand all aspects of. But it doesn’t mean that your way is the right way. DOC, Season 2, Episode 3, set me on my side making me think twice about how hard it is for the doctors to make choices.
Mine included. I love watching dramas in hospitals because even though they are far fetched it still makes me appreciate how complicated a doctors life can be. Gives me a little more patience for them.
But this episode of DOC the person I have the most patience for is Jake. Lets dive into it.
JOAN IS EVIL
I have nothing nice to say about Joan – ever. I think she’s cruel, manipulative, and a liar. But it is her first day as Chief and she’s coming in swinging. The person that she’s coming after is Amy and I am wondering why. She is about to make it seem like she’s rooting for Amy and I do believe a part of her is. But what she’s rooting for is Amy’s failure because if she fails then Joan gets to keep her secrets.
While it is gross enough that Joan was part of the reason that Amy left Michael, it really feels as if Joans been playing Amy for years. If she can make Amy follow her every word, it means that she can manipulate her to her wishes. However, that being said – destroying Amy means that she’s making sure that Amy doesn’t remember.
While it’s disappointing that the majority of what Amy has remembered has to do with Joan, it makes sense that she is because Joan has just recently returned. But what a memory of Amy’s does tell us is that Joan is sick. She’s trying her best to hide it and she doesn’t want Amy to remember it.
It’s why she is digging into Amy and trying to find a way to make her look bad. If she can make sure that Amy looses credibility then no one will believe her if she remembers what is going on with Joan.

I think that there is nothing that Joan isn’t willing to do in order to keep her secrets and put herself first. She’s crazy.
And whatever happens – she’s going to be at the center of it. I have no doubt. She wants to make the hospital the best in the country, but I do believe that she wants that because it’s her way to slide into her job and figure out who she can manipulate and those that she can’t will be forced out after two months.
AMY IS WRECKLESS
We’re three episodes into this season and I am going to admit that I have really started to like Amy. While the show does do some disservice when it comes to her – I have to admit that I think that she’s rising above a lot. She has found a part of herself – a strength really – because she’s gotten to the point where she’s remembering things that she had forgotten. Flashes of things.
Amy wants to be a good doctor and she really wants to show that she’s filled with compassion. It’s one thing that has made me feel like she’s changing and that we just need to be patient with her.
The issue is that the patient that she gets that day needs to be in Mexico. She’s part of a study that uses stem cells. Stem Cell therapy for MS is illegal in the US and for Amy, she’s trying to figure out a way to help her patient and learn about what she’s doing so that they can get to the root of the problem.
What Amy finds out is that if her patient doesn’t make it to Mexico, she will be let go from the study. Her patient says she will be leaving. Unfortunately for her, Gina is willing to put her on a 72 hour hold if she needs to. That leads the patient to have her shot that she needs sent from Mexico and brought to the hospital.
Amy does the injection to make sure that her patient doesn’t get hurt. Only it is against the law.
Do I think that Amy is in the right? No. I think she shouldn’t have let the patient get the shot. She is jeopardizing her own career and medical license for a woman that she doesn’t know. What we do need to remember is that Amy of the past isn’t Amy now. She has some understanding of patients that she didn’t before. Allowing Amy to use that understanding makes her a better doctor, even if people believe that she’s being reckless.
TJ IS EMPOWERED
I anticipate that TJ’s recovery won’t take a long time, but it will take sometime. He’s ready to be back at work, but here’s hoping that he’s coming to grips with the fact that will not happen for a bit. TJ was shot. He can’t walk without crutches and is in a wheelchair. He’s struggling but is going to be doing everything that he can in order to make his way back to work.
At therapy he sees a fellow serviceman who is having a hard time. This poor guy is suffering. He’s lost his leg and the prosthetic isn’t easy for him to work with. It’s TJ that really listens and realizes that there is something wrong.

Maitra and him are trying to figure out what is going on and they do find out – the man has cobalt posioning from his hip replacement. They are able to save more of the mans leg and that makes him so happy. He looked destroyed when he thought that he was going to loose his knee.
I think that this was so important because for TJ, he was able to feel that rush and know that he’s making big strides. He got to remember what practicing medicine is like and it will be a motivator for him to return and to heal.

JAKE IS PUT IN A POSITION
Joan gives Jake a job for the day. With TJ down, they need another intern and he needs to do interviews. Jake is surprised that he’s getting this responsibility, but I think that it is good because he will be able to see that he is valuable.
Jake is a man that has always seen past what other people have said and forms his own ideas. He’s trying to separate himself from Amy and what others say about her. Him protecting his heart isn’t easy with all of the drama that happens around him. He has to face Amy everyday.

He’s seeing that something is wrong with Amy. He sees she needs him. She wants to communicate, but she at some points is trying to respect his wishes and at others is trying to make him see how loved he is. When her patient needs help, she gets his help and has to admit that she gave her the stem cells.
Jake is mad and he has every right to be. But he will never turn his back on Amy. He loves her – we all know that. When she remembered him telling her that he loved her, I squealed. Even the look on his face was hope.
When she kissed him I clapped and also was mad. Hear me out – I love them together, but I don’t love his wishes not being honored. He asked her to stop. We know that when it comes to Amy and Jake – one is going to get hurt. I think that both will be, but I am hoping that is kept to a minimum. I just really think that sometime this season we’re going to see a lot of fallout.
Somewhere.
MAITRA
When Amy tells him that Maitra has a crush on him – I about died. He didn’t want to believe it, but he needed to know. They’ve been hanging out and this is just giving her hope. She’s Even though he’s fighting that now, I am pretty sure that it’s going to come up and be something that he eventually acts upon. It would be the one thing that makes me hate him.
Jake is struggling with the memories he can’t get rid of. I don’t think that any of us will ever really be able to understand where he is coming from, but I also believe that he is someone who deserves patience.
He deserves understanding.
Who he chooses to give that in return to though – that is a different question. Maitra, I believe he’s going to struggle with.
MICHAEL AND NORA
I was glad that we got to see Katie here. She should be around more often – mostly because I think that her Dad needs her also. She heads over to make dinner and to visit them.
Nora and Michael are tired. They just had a baby so that is to be expected. Katie being there are spending time with her brother is what she needed, especially because Amy has been so busy.
But what really is hard for me to understand is why Nora says to Michael that he looked so happy as soon as Katie said that Amy was remembering stuff. She also mentions that Michael may worry if Amy remembers why she left.

There are too many secrets going on here. Too many secrets with every person on this show and at a certain point, it’s going to all start. to come out. When it rises to the top – because secrets always do – will any of them be able to handle it?
We’ve got 19 more episodes this season to watch it all come to fruition. I am both afraid and excited.
Season 2 of DOC is really just that good.
DOC airs Tuesdays on Fox.
