Emily In Paris Season 5, Episode 3 has changed a lot for us. Yes, we’re on the third episode of the season and we do know that there is a lot left to go. That being said though, this show has grown. It’s not about Emily being this person that everything just falls in her lap and she can creatively solve everything. It’s not that simple for her anymore.
Emily is finding her way in a new city and learning a new culture. She’s having to let somethings go and also find a new strength in herself. She’s in a relationship unlike any that she’s ever been in before. She’s seeing forever and she’s seeing fear.
But she’s definitely not the only one that has things to go through. Mindy and Alfie are also going to be going through some things this episode that will change them and change their dynamics with Emily – once she finds out.
It’s a new day in Rome and Rome is about to change everyone. Including the viewer. Dang Netflix, you did good here.
ALL ABOUT THAT “D”
Seeing Marcello’s perfectly sculpted behind was not something that I saw on my bingo card, but here I am and I have seen it and I have been changed. I would have loved it if Marcello and Emily stayed in bed all day, but they have to go to work. These two feel different and in their own little world. So much so that when she’s like I hate to go, but I love to watch you leave – they both forget for a second that Mindy is there on the couch.
RELATED: The first episode sets the tone – Emily In Paris has grown up
Marcello walking down the stairs butt naked and then coming up the stairs covering his penis – not what I expected. But hey, she knows what her besties is getting.
After seeing the big “D,” Mindy knows that she’s going to get out. The TV show that Mindy is going to be on offers to put her up in a hotel so she’s packing her bag to go there. Emily doesn’t want her to go, but in usual Mindy fashion the sarcasm is flowing and she says Marcello’s dick was basically showing me away this morning.
You can’t stop laughing though when Marcello is still embarrassed and is apologizing to Mindy. I don’t pretend to understand the apologies. Embrace it. So she saw your “D” – it is not a big deal. When Mindy tells him “no biggie” I fell off my bed laughing because he did not get the American phrase. Mindy has to explain she means no big deal and tell him that his penis is perfect.
What a way to start the show.
PLEASING
Sylvie’s personal life is coming into the office. Giancarlo has signed on for the short film and is pitching the concept. Antonia is agreeing to all the things, but Marcello is trying to get her to see the bigger picture. He wants this to be global and will this hit the global audience?
Antonia is getting charmed by Antoine and Giancarlo and that is the way that Sylvie likes it. Antonia, I am loving everything that she’s finding within herself. The same way that I am loving that Sylvie is sticking up for her in her own Sylvie way. But I do agree with Marcello and Emily that it does need to be a little bit more cosmopolitan. I think that it’s really important that there is a balance.
But for Sylvie it’s about having to find a balance with the client and her man. Giancarlo is probably still upset over Laurents whole thing.
I know that Sylvie will always do what she needs to do for her company, but she’s also letting these men take too much control over her. She deserves better. Giancarlo needs to let somethings go and he needs to give Sylvie some grace. She didn’t ask Laurent to come there. He did.
Sylvie though, she is going to take it out on Emily and she reminds her that Antonia is who they need to please. Not Marcello. Emily doesn’t feel like she can do anything right, but she’s also not wrong here. It’s just her relationship with Marcello and the fact that Sylvie is trying to keep her men happy that is a trigger.
THE NEXT PITCH
Jane knows everyone and the next pitch is a lingerie company. Luc wants to lead it, but Sylvie puts Emily in charge. She wants to prove to the Italians that the French sell sex better, but I have to admit she’s definitely right to put Emily in charge of this.
Emily is at home trying to figure out the campaign. She and Marcello are bouncing off ideas and they are in sync with each other. The two end up getting intimate and he tells her that she can leave on the lingerie and well, that’s not a bad idea.
But when she does pitch that – the brand and Jame don’t get it. Emily asks if she can take all the notes and think about it and come back with a revised pitch. They give her til the next day and she is a little nervous, but if there is anyone that can do it – it is Emily.
Emily is with Julian at the coffee station and telling him that her ideas aren’t translating to Rome. Emily thought that the Italians liked sex. However, Julian tells her that they are actually very repressed.
When Luc walks up and Julian tells him that Emily is having Intimissi (the brand) issues, Luc takes that as intimacy issues. He tells Emily from the moment you got to Paris, I realized that these walls were up and who can blame you, after all she is American and in a foreign country. Emily has to correct him and tell him it’s because of the campaign. Luc wasn’t wrong though.
THE DIRECTOR WALKS OFF
Sylvie is on set with Giancarlo. He is definitely not used to someone offering their opinion every five minutes and he is definitely frustrated that Sylvie is doing just that. He takes the notes, but isn’t happy about them.
He’s even less happy when they are on the set at the theater. He has his vision but Sylvie has a different one. She’s talking to Antonia and when the two are talking Antonia wonders what Umberto would think if he was still alive. She thinks that it would be too Hollywood for him. Umberto and Antonia didn’t always agree, but she wants to honor him. It was less lonely when he as alive, that they got to do the work together and there was that conversation about things. Now, everything was on her shoulders.
I think that it’s very hard for both of them to live in that space where they are trying their best to understand each other, but Sylvie and Antonia are trying. They both agree that the end of the film should have the man and the woman together in the theater.
Giancarlo is acting like a big baby when Sylvie changes the ending. He’s taking the issue of how he felt with her husband being there and bringing it into work. It is a huge deal to him and so he reacts and tells Sylvie, you know what you direct this. He told the crew that Sylvie is directing his stuff and walks off. He looks at her and tells her it doesn’t feel good to be left. Does it?
The morning after Mindy’s performance – Sylvie comes into the office and slams her office door shut. Emily is the one who has to ask her if she’s okay, and surprisingly Sylvie is honest.
The shoot is a mess and Sylvie may have to direct this entire shoot. Giancarlo refuses to come back. Sylvie may have ruined this entire campaign . You see the looking Emily‘s eyes and she is scared and I think she’s scared because of Marcello. She loves him and doesn’t wanna let him down.
MINDY AND ALFIE DANCE
While I can get behind Alfie being there for his friends, this is a tricky road these two are going down. After a bad rehearsal with the show she’s going to be on, she texts Alfie to help her.
Mindy can’t wrap her head around doing a lift. She knows how to dance and she does this fantastic job dancing. But this lift is an issue for her and so she calls Alfie in for help.
There is no denying that these two have chemistry. She knows that she is walking a thin line, but he is the person to help her right now. He’s going to get her out of her head and get her to the lift. Only he’s also gonna be the person that makes out with her once he brings her down from the lift.
But she does it too.
SHOWTIME
Paris or Rome – people are coming to support Mindy. Emily and Marcello, Julian and Luc, and well… Alfie. I am glad that Emily is the because Mindy needs her bestie, not only because she’s nervous but because someone has to spray glue on her behind.
Emily and Mindy have a connection. The two can be honest with each other. I think that is part of the reason that Mindy breaking girl code and being dishonest is hard for me to swallow. The same way that Emily bringing up her issues when she should be hyping Mindy up is hard for me to swallow.
What I do appreciate is that Mindy does tell Emily she’s not open. That she keeps things in and doesn’t initiate the conversation, but will be open if someone else brings up something first.
Mindy doesn’t need to talk about this right now though. She needs her space.
She needs to calm a bit but there is no amount of calming that can make this better. Her partner tells her no lift in Italian and he doesn’t understand what he is saying. She goes in for that lift, believing that she can hit it but he’s not ready for her. He falls over and she falls on top of him.
Everyone is stunned. Everybody thinks that she’s never gonna perform again. Luke and Alfie look like they’re about to faint. Emily and Marcello look shocked. But Julian, he’s like that was amazing. The judges are like that was embarrassing and they basically are like embarrassed for her. They give her like four points total.
Her dance partner calls her an idiot.
After the show, Luc and Julian have to take off. Mindy doesn’t want to talk or think about it, she just wants to go to the hotel. Alfie and Mindy are sharing a cab back.
Marcello asks Emily how the Pitch went. She tells him it wasn’t his finest her finest moment, but she has other ideas. He’s wants to be supportive and asks if she wants to tell them to him? She’s like I’d rather not talk about work. We’re all shocked.
THE CONVENT
Leave it to Luc to find a hotel to stay in that is a convent. The sisters love him though and its cheap and centrally located. He just has to deal with an 11 o’clock curfew.
A curfew as an adult isn’t always fun. He’s warned Bianca that when he goes to meet him that night, she needs to be there by 11pm as the nuns are strict on the curfew. She is late and the nuns are not going to let her in.
I can understand that she is upset as she’s walked all the way there in lingerie and heels. Luc finds a window to apologize and she makes the remark asking if he’s staying in a convent. He tells her it’s very central in a good rate. Can respect the want to save money. He wants to respect her, but also wants to respect the nuns.
Luc gets all the women and I respect that about him. She doesn’t want to leave without showing Luc his surprise and opens up her trench coat to show him she’s only wearing her lingerie. I love that Luc is talking her up and a lot of people are stepping out to see what he’s yelling about. Some think that she is a hooker, but it is the sisters that had me laughing. The sisters are like you know Jesus loves the hookers but there’s also a curfew.
Only would happen to Luc.
THE WALK
Emily and Marcello spending time together, not talking work and just enjoying the city is beautiful. It’s nice to see a different side of Emily and also nice to see Rome. It’s nice to see her know that she’s not an inconvenience and actually tells him what is on her mind.
She talks about how she can’t stop thinking about what he said about his mom and she says that her family was the same. They made her believe that she had to be perfect. She had to get good grades, the good job, and thats succeeding. Here in Rome though, she looks around and loves the city. She thinks the cracks in the crumbling columns and that maybe she doesn’t have to push so hard. Maybe she doesn’t have to be perfect and it will be fine.
The way he looks at her made me smile. It was as if she just gave him the biggest gift. I got chills. He looks at her and says maybe it’ll be more than fine and this is why Marcello we love.
Emily and Marcello are this couple that can have fun – they just have to find a balance between each other and they are on their way. As he shimmies his rear end down the stairs, she calls Mindy. You could tell that Mindy was on edge and rushing Emily off. It’s when Emily and her finally disconnect, we see why. She slept with Alfie.
Not shocked, but hate that she did it. Hate how it will change things. Hate that Mindy just wasn’t honest.
