This season of Emily In Paris has been something that so far we loved. We loved until this episode, because this episode broke us in a way. It made us feel pain and hurt. It made us feel joy. There is a mix of so many emotions and what I would call emotional whiplash.
The thing about this episode is that Sylvie and Emily both had big wins. However, in those big wins, big losses also came. Sometimes it’s about remembering who you are and sometimes it’s about remembering what is important. Sometimes it is a mix of both. You see when they say that a decision can change things, they truly can.
Decisions can change everything. Sometimes those decisions are out of your control. One person can make everything good and one can make everything bad. Princess Jane may be the catalyst here (she is it – but trying to be nice) showing that royalty doesn’t always know what is best.
Rome has felt like a fresh new lease on life, until now.
Rome is Fallen is an appropriate title for a heartbreaking episode.

THE DOOR
A marketing event is a complicated thing. People don’t hire influencers or to drive sales all of the time. Sometimes it is about brand awareness. When there is someone that they trust, they are willing to buy. However, Antonia is the person that is telling Marcello to leave her alone. She knows what she’s doing.
Antonia wanting to know about the short film and Sylvie freaking out tells me what I need to know. Giancarlo is a baby. Sylvie says that he won’t let anyone see it until he’s happy with it. I know that there is a part of Sylvie that is living with regret, but I also feel that there is a part of her that really just wants to stop questioning everything she did.
Rome is not feeling very easy for Sylvie. She’s feeling on edge personally and professionally, taking it out on Emily. When Emily tells Sylvie to get to editing and that she will take over meetings – I loved that moment. Sylvie needs someone to tell her what to do, but also someone to blame. Love that both can be Emily.
I didn’t know that there was a place that you could look through a hole in a door and see a beautiful view of Saint Peter’s Basilica. I do love that Marcello takes Emily to places like this and reminds her just how great she is doing. She’s conquering France, Italy, and is American. Emily should be proud of all that she has done.
Marcello takes Emily to that hole in the door where you can see Saint Peter Basilica and like the view is amazing in Rome she is taken with him and I love it. He is telling her that she’s conquering France in Italy and she’s an American and it’s great to see him. Admit that he was wrong but also great to tell her that like great that a man like tells her like you did the impossible you got my mom to throw this event like you did an amazing thing emily and she did she did a really amazing thing

VACATION BRAIDS
Mindy and Alfie – I am so mad at them right now. I think that their dishonesty is disgusting and the fact that they keep going at it without being honest is gross. The two may be staying in the same hotel, but they need to stay apart.
Mindy is trying to make sense of the situation by just saying that it is vacation sex. That when they go back to Paris it will stop. It shows how Mindy knows what she’s doing is wrong. Alfie is not afraid to make her second guess that. She may have said the last time they were having sex was yesterday.
Mindy has the best analogy for what is happening between the two of them. She says it is just vacation sex and that makes it like vacation braids. You know you shouldn’t get them. You get them and regret them. The braids get washed out before you get to the airport, so you do not feel bad about them.
I am not sure if Alfie likes her or just likes having sex with her. Either way it’s a road that both need to be careful on. It doesn’t take much convincing for Mindy to get in the shower with him. These two are just making me so damn mad! Tell Emily!
Mindy is even at her house that night and bonding with Emily, but doesn’t tell her. Someone is going to have to come clean.

PARIS FEELS NEGLECTED
Emilie, Luke and Julian sit down for a meeting with Bergeron. Genevieve is still a troll, telling them that the people won’t take a zoom meeting, but then before you know it – Bergeron is there on the zoom. Genevieve is the devil.
Bergeron is telling them that everyone is talking all about them. They are saying that no one can get ahold of them, that they are taking their clients for granted, and somehow it needs to change. The Paris clients are going to start pulling their support if meetings can’t be done in person.
As much as Emily tries to convince Bergeron that they are there for them, they will not take another meeting.
Someone needs to head back to Paris. When your client doesn’t believe you that is a problem.

THE EVENT
The event seems perfect. Emily has told them the influencers that no lives or videos – just a post. She wants to maintain the feel of Solitano. It’s just the person who doesn’t listen is Princess Jane. Emily tries to stop her, but Jane, well she doesn’t listen.
We’ve said before that we don’t trust Jane. She has ruined everything by going live and also by dropping a pin of where the town is. The event is about quality of our quantity, but Jane doesn’t care. For her, it’s about her. How ironic that the person that is supposed to help the agency destroys it.
There is a lot that is happening at the event, but Sylvie is freaking out. She doesn’t want to show the film, but when Emily sees it on Sylvie’s phone she sends to herself to showcase. Emily goes over her head and premieres it.
The truth is, it is really good. Sylvie doesn’t give herself enough credit. Sylvie may be shocked, but Emily assures her it is really good.
Antonia loves the event – she even tells Emily that Umberto would have loved it. Antonia has trust and confidence in Emily. She remarks that the company isn’t the only thing that she’s trusting Emily with. I do love that she knows that Emily wants to protect Marcello’s heart.
When Emily sees Sylvie she runs off to talk to her. Sylvie is so impressed, she’s willing to leave now and put Emily in charge of the Rome office. The thing is though, everything is about to change. Neither of them will admit it but they need each other.

THE OVER IT
Giancarlo is an idiot. There are so many things that he could say to make it better with him and Sylvie. The both of them don’t have any idea how to just apologize. The two are hesitant to be the first to apologize.
Giancarlo and Sylvie are stubborn, but I do not understand why it is that the two can’t just admit they are wrong. It does take a lot for them to move forward in any way, but it does move forward. The editor may think that the film is bad, but we found out that it wasn’t at all.
Him showing up in Solitano and taking credit for the film – gross. But also the way that he treats Sylvie is gross. He may tell her that the film is goss and that her name should be on there. That’s good, that he realizes that. It’s just the way that he tries to control her that turns out to be the thing that grosses me out the most about him.
I do love that what Sylvie realizes is that what she values is her partnership with her husband. She is being very honest with him and I love that for her. She’s taking charge. He thinks she is running away from him, but the truth is she’s running towards something. I can respect that because she is and she sees that. What is important to her is her life in Paris.

THE PROBLEM
The next day, Emily runs into the office. The event made Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Womens Wear Daily, and even Tatler. The first run of the perfume is set to sell out. The agency did everything that they thought would make it a success.
But happiness only lasts so long. Marcello tells Emilie to get to Solitano, there is a problem. A big problem.
One thing that Emily was very specific about with all of the influencers was no video and no lives. This keeps Solitano off the radar. But the person that didn’t pay attention was Princess Jane. She told everyone where they were.
And now the small town is overrun with tourists. Emily heading to the town, seeing it be overrun by tourists – she didn’t want this. What is sad to see is that Antonia is angry. The goats are in shock.
Emily knows that this is a lot, but she didn’t expect this to happen
Antonia blames Emily for ruining the town and fires her.
While Emily wants to talk to her, Marcello says that it is not a good thing when she’s that angry. I have to feel for Emily because she didn’t ask for or expect this. What she wanted was for their brand to succeed. It’s what she finds out next that broke me.
Marcello knew that his Mom was trying to ride out the JVMA clock. It is because of the perfume that they they have upped their offer. This entire time Marcello has been working against Emily. He didn’t tell her and had been dishonest this entire time.
It is heartbreaking for Emily to know that the man that she was falling in love with is the person that didn’t want her to succeed. Like any of us would ask – why wasn’t he honest. Well, his response would have gotten him slapped from me – he tells her because in order for one of us to win one of us had to lose.
I love Marcello but right now he’s like on Alfie level. He’s a liar and like that’s just so wrong. Emily walks out from him and heads back to Rome. Marcello is texting her, wanting to talk to her,but she has nothing to say and I don’t blame her. She doesn’t owe him anything. To him it doesn’t have to end like this, but maybe it does.

THE FIRING
Luc is a player and that is something. I do love that he’s found this confidence in himself and he’s a ladies man. He wakes up to someone pounding on the door. It is one of the sisters and as he goes to open the door, she reminds him that he needs to put on a robe.
Who is at the door? Well that would be Marianne. When he asks to close the door, he’s told no. The sisters won’t let him close the door because – well – no sex in the convent.
Luc wants to know how Marianne found him. She’s creepy and said, “I work for the phone company. I tracked your location.” We’re talking about a stalker here. Marianne claims she was joking, that she called the office to send a care package but decided to come herself.
Genevieve gives out addresses? Marianne wants to take Luc to lunch. He can’t because of the Muratori event. She won’t take no for an answer, as she’s been waiting to see him for so long. Marianne is scary and so I am surprised that Luc is with her, but also I think Luc likes the woman that will dominate him.
But there is a time when he was going to get caught having a girlfriend in Rome. Marianne takes him to lunch and Bianca shows up at the same restaurant. This is a scary prospect. But when he gets caught having two girlfriends and then gets dumped by both.
But in the same moment Luc also looses the Bavassa account for the agency. None of this seems like it is going to be good.
And it may be worse when he has to head back to Paris.

KNOWING WHEN TO CUT YOUR LOSSES
The only person who hasn’t been a problem child in Italy is Julian. He’s just living his life and we don’t know about it. But with what has already happened with Emily and Luc and the agencies loosing Muratori as well as Bavassa, Sylvie knows that there is a time to cut their losses. She is shutting the Rome office and the team needs to go back to Paris.
Sylvie tries to comfort Emily by saying Marcello can come and visit Paris. I had to laugh because when Emily said that she didn’t know if she’d see Marcello again, Julian said something along the lines of, “she ruined that too, we need to get her out of Rome before she knocks down the Colosseum.”
I fell off the bed laughing.
But Emily is heartbroken. You can see it in her face. She was so close to running the Rome office and she feels as though she failed. Sylvie had the best response to that, telling her that some would say she succeeded too well. And when Emily asked if Sylvie would say that, Sylvie would say that no one could have predicted this.
The truth is no one could have.
One day Emily will run an office, but it won’t be in Rome right now. Am I excited to go back to Paris? I am not sure. But what I am sure of is that I will miss Rome. I will miss Marcello, although what he did isn’t really redeemable at this point. I just hope we find a way for it to be.
I am Team Marcello. I don’t see that changing. But it doesn’t matter what I see, because the writers are in charge and we have a road to take.
