The Josh Hartnett renaissance is here. Yes, that’s right, twenty-five years after Pearl Harbor, Hartnett is once again headlining a project we’re very excited about. And this one, a mini-series which also stars Charlie Heaton and Mackenzie Davis, now has a release date on Netflix.
But that’s not all; the miniseries will also receive a preview screening in the Primetime program at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. Always a good sign, considering that to get into TIFF in the first place, a panel already watched the show.
What is Below about? How scary is it? And is anyone making it out of it alive? Here’s what we know:
The logline for the miniseries reads: “When a mysterious sea creature terrorizes a small Newfoundland town, a hard-bitten fisherman must fight to protect his family, his community, and his vanishing way of life.”
And the synopsis reads:
Calvin Penney (Josh Hartnett) is a big‑hearted but stubborn fisherman living in a small Newfoundland town, who’s still haunted by his father’s mysterious death from decades ago. When an unidentified sea creature begins terrorizing his hometown, Calvin must fight to hold his close-knit community together. Determined to keep his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) and the rest of his family safe, he teams up with a visiting marine researcher (Mackenzie Davis) to confront the creature and reveal the island’s buried secrets before it’s too late. Blending local myth, thrilling suspense, and heartfelt humour, this twisty six-part limited series dives into themes of family, community, and change – both terrifying and inevitable.
