I have never found much use in pretending: I am a cynic where love is concerned. I do not believe in it — not in the sweeping, fated way that books, movies, and television tell it. And yet. And yet the romances still find me, still undo me a little, every single time. Perhaps that contradiction is the truest thing about me. I think it is because love, even when I refuse it for myself, is the one idea I cannot stop watching from a safe distance.
The notion that something could be so consuming, so defining, that it might just as easily break you as hold you together. And yet my life is layered with romance novels and films, watched and reread until the spines soften and break. I write in the margins and highlight the passages that consume me. As a self proclaimed cynic, I would not trade that habit for anything. My cynicism is a part of me. It also is the desperation to find something and someone who would make me believe that love exists. I believe it is why I love Hallmark- , it convinces me of something I claim not to trust.
So when I heard about the limited series Paris Is Always a Good Idea, I felt that familiar pull. I didn’t know what it was about, but it’s Paris. I only knew I wanted to sit and watch this story.
Surprisingly, it’s not what I thought it would be, but somehow it’s what I needed.
The Story Chelsea Tells
We meet Chelsea on what is unmistakably her wedding day, speaking softly into a recording on her phone, telling the story of the year she fell in love three times in one year. It was a gap year. This sounded a touch dramatic. The longer I watched, the more I needed to know how she got there. There is something quietly clever, I think, in opening a love story from its own ending. We already know she survives whatever comes, that somewhere ahead of her is a wedding dress and hopefully a happy heart. It tells me, before anything else happens, that this is not really a story about whether she finds love. It is a story about what she has to walk through to let herself believe she deserves it.
I find that to be the most relatable part of this whole experience. I think we’re all on that journey and sometimes it is that journey that makes us stop and take notice.
PARENTS LOVE STORY
She begins her story with her parents love story. It’s relatable, because our parents’ love is really the first love story that any of us know. She talks of her father living in Paris, her mother making her way through Europe for a year, the two of them finding each other in the middle of them finding themselves.
Chelsea once asked her mother what it was about her father that told her he was the one. Her mother only said, I cannot tell you all my secrets. I felt disappointed, because I wanted to know them too. I keep returning to that, because it is not really an answer, and not meant to be one. Some loves resist explanation and maybe true love is really quite unexplainable. I think her mother understood that trying to reduce it to reasons would have made it smaller than it was, and some things are only true in full, never in pieces.
LIKE MOTHER
Mimicking her mothers year of travel – Chelsea spent a year traveling through Europe. She was living fully, not worrying about anything else, and living without apologizing for who she is. But, Europe changed Chelsea.
She left one way and came home another — with a heart in pieces. But she had been living. Truly living. There is bravery in that because the strongest thing that one can do is believe in hope. It was after that year that Chelsea made a quiet promise to herself to never to risk her heart so openly again. I am not sure if she did that out loud or if her soul just started doing that for her.
She stopped asking her mother questions about love and buried herself in work instead. Looking back at this early setup, the show deliberately plants its whole argument in this one choice. Chelsea did not simply lose at love. She decided that losing once meant she was finished trying. Grief and heartbreak get treated, so often in her mind, as the same wound. True, sometime they are one in the same, but can you truly grieve what is still alive inside of you?
Maybe the show will be able to give me that answer.
The Bicker, and the Ache Beneath It
When Chelsea arrives at the office Knightley is using her treadmill without asking. She tells him to leave, and the two of them fall into what seems to be a familiar cycle of bickering. Jason Knightley is impossibly charming, and somehow she reads him as though he were written just for her to understand. I find something comfortable in the way they argue. I kept asking myself what truth their sparring was circling around without saying. Perhaps to the writers it was only a device to move the plot forward. But I see something deeper.
Not to get to deep but for some reason I find symbolism in all of it. The treadmill itself feels almost too fitting a symbol to be accidental — a woman who never stops moving, whose worth to herself is measured in output, confronted by someone standing exactly where her forward motion is supposed to happen. He does not chase her. He simply refuses to get out of her way. That is the only kind of pursuit a person like Chelsea could ever tolerate.
And if you’re like Chelsea – that feeling is all too familiar. At least for me it is.
Chelsea works for the American Cancer Coalition, chasing the largest single donation in the organization’s history — fifty million dollars, offered by a woman in France who cannot seem to focus during the pitch over video call. The woman asks for Chelsea to come to France and make her case in person.
FRANCE
France is the last place Chelsea wants to be. Why? Because of her mother. It’s the one place that her mother wanted her to go. Chelsea has never quite let herself grieve it or move past her mothers request. Going feels impossible. But is Paris not, always, somehow, a good idea — even when it terrifies us?
The show does not send Chelsea to Paris for romance. It sends her there for the version of purpose she trusts most – work. Whatever happens after that is left to fate. Love only finds room to exist once she has an excuse to be standing in the place that she feels most broken. But is letting anyone in that simple? For me it wouldn’t be and I feel like it wouldn’t be for Chelsea.
Walls are safe. Love is not. That feels honest to how healing actually happens — sideways, unplanned, disguised as something else entirely. At least that’s what I get from therapy.
FLIGHTS
I wish that I had known that this story involved a mothers passing because for me – that would mean facing my own healing that needs to happen. I pressed pause, cried, and turned it back on – ready to face whatever came and emotionally attacked me.
As she puts up a fight to not go to Paris, her boss asks if she is afraid of flying, since in seven years working for him, she has never once taken a vacation. It is a small detail that says everything about her. I confess I recognized myself in it a little, being someone who finds rest a luxury meant for some, but not for me. But her fear is about saying goodbye.
The last time she was in Paris, she could not finish something her mother had asked of her, something called Paris Revisited. The instructions are sealed inside an envelope whose contents we do not yet know, only that it carries a weight she is not ready for.
When her boss offers to send Knightley instead, Chelsea accepts the need to go to Paris without hesitation. In that moment, it feels like the only right thing for her to do, even though she does not yet understand why.
DAD MOVES ON
When Chelsea arrives at her fathers that evening, she finds her sister quietly doing the laundry. Chelsea has been absent from family dinners for a long while. Her family has missed her more than she realizes. Her father is overjoyed to see her, and there, into his living room, walks a woman named Sherry. Chelsea’s reaction to her is cool, distant, though her father has every right to love again since her mother’s passing. It is not logical, but grief rarely obeys logic. For Chelsea there is a look on her face like loving again might mean forgetting. I think this is where the show quietly widens its own lessons – Chelsea is not the only one being asked to risk her heart again. Her father is doing it in real time, in his own home, while she watches and cannot yet forgive him for being braver than she is.
IN A TIME OF NEED
When Chelsea mentions the trip to Paris, Sherry excuses herself early, citing an early morning, and everyone can feel the conversation still hanging unfinished in the room. Sherry knows the weight of Paris on the family. Her father and sister ask how she is truly feeling, and they offer, without being asked, to come with her. I think there is something quietly humbling and full of need in that offer. It’s as if they know that she needs help, because she may break. Breaking is not something that Chelsea can accept. She’s not ready for goodbyes, so needing her family is familiar. Needing help has never meant weakness – if anything, admitting you need someone beside you may be the bravest thing a person can do. Chelsea hesitates, uncertain, until her father says the words her mother always used to say: Paris is always a good idea.
SELFISH
They are staying somewhere warm and lovely in Paris. Chelsea unpacks immediately the way she does everything – in control, orderly, careful not to feel too much all at once. Her sister does not bother, and when she empties her duffel bag onto the bed, the envelope falls out. Paris Revisited. The thing their mother left behind.
Chelsea is stunned, almost wounded, asking how her sister could bring it without her say. She is not ready to say goodbye. But her sister reveals something Chelsea did not know — that they never completed it ten years ago, not because anyone forgot, but because their mother wanted them to do it together, all of them, whole. Chelsea insists she is not ready. Her sister answers simply that she brought it for herself. I keep thinking about how differently grief sits in each of them. I think, is the quiet mercy of this whole scene – the show never asks us to decide which sister is grieving correctly, because there is no correct way.
Looking out the window, Chelsea sees Knightley arriving below, and she has no idea why he would be there. Downstairs, he asks if he might at least get some sleep before she pulls him into whatever this is. She learns, to her disbelief, that her boss sent him without telling her — and calls to ask why, catching her boss right before yoga, which felt like the only mercy available to him at that moment.
THE NEXT SELFISH MORNING
At a café, Chelsea has sent Knightley a copy of her pitch, and his silence irritates her. I think, watching her, that control is simply how she survives – if everything happens exactly her way, nothing can surprise her enough to hurt her. Meeting him later, he listens to her voice memos and gently teases her for recording herself constantly. She tells him he can mock her all he likes, it works for her. He tries to understand her, and she resents that he is there at all. He asks why her family is there and when she doesn’t want to answer he is not entirely gentle, sounding like he is mocking her family’s grief as though it were spoiled indulgence.
Pushed to the edge, Chelsea tells him the truth: her mother died. She did not want a funeral. She asked her family to come back to Paris and let her go there. It was not that Chelsea could not do it, she wasn’t ready then and isn’t now. She asks him, quietly, to stop looking at her with pity. I understood that plea more than I expected to — what do you say to someone who has lost their mother? I am sorry? it never seems to hold enough weight, even when it is the only thing we are taught to offer.
WOW
He tells her that perhaps she is being selfish, that her family needs closure, and she was too consumed by her own fear to see it. He may be right. Sometimes we can only see our own pain, when the truth is larger than us. The truth is the hardest thing to hear, especially from someone she is not yet ready to trust.
What interests me here is that Knightley’s role in the story is not, at least not yet, to comfort her. Every other person in her life is gentle with her because they love her too carefully to challenge her. He has no such history to protect, and so he becomes, almost by accident, the first honest mirror she has faced in years.
What the Recordings Said
Still hurt by his words, Chelsea calls her father and tells him she is ready. They travel together to the first place her Mom wanted them to visit – a market, meant for Annabelle. But the place has closed long ago, and something in Chelsea breaks quietly at the sight of it, as though she has failed her mother simply by arriving too late. I do not think she failed anyone. I think she is stronger than she believes herself to be. Annabelle turns off the recording before their mother finishes speaking, and though Chelsea reminds her their mother was not done, their father says gently that Annabelle is done, and perhaps that was truly all she needed — permission to move forward.
By the Eiffel Tower, it feels almost inevitable that Chelsea would face her mother’s words there. Her mother speaks of the what ifs Chelsea has carried for years – what if she had stayed, what if she had chosen differently and asks her not to live inside those questions. Her mother says that twenty-five years after meeting her father, she would still choose him, every time, and then tears up an old train ticket the two of them once held onto. Chelsea does not know if she is capable of that kind of certainty. But she knows, somewhere underneath the grief, that she is still living inside what was, rather than what could be. Her mother, even in death, seems to understand exactly which fear her daughter is hiding behind.
ANNABELLE HAS TROUBLE
Annabelle struggles through the moment, wondering aloud if their mother even knew them at all when she wrote these messages. Chelsea gently reminds her that an old injury does not diminish how proud their mother was of her. Annabelle turns the conversation back onto Chelsea instead – pointing out that she does not date, that these mysterious almost-loves she keeps buried are proof enough that romance frightens her more than she admits. Chelsea only says, quietly, I waited too long. I am sorry. I waited too long. Annabelle walks away, and their father tells Chelsea gently that he never blamed her for not coming back sooner. It might be the kindest thing said in the whole story so far — because living with regret was the one thing their mother never wanted for any of them.
TRUTH
They move on to a bench where their mother used to read. Her father plays his own recording — his wife telling him she loves him, that everything meaningful between them has already been said, but that she brought him here for their daughters, so that they might witness what happiness looks like, and so that he might find it again himself. Annabelle calls it a disaster, and their father reminds them their mother wanted this to be hopeful, that she wanted them to find love the way she once found his. It is then that he admits he plans to ask Sherry to marry him.
Chelsea questions how he could possibly know her well enough after so little time, and he answers simply that he does not need more time to know he loves her. I find something almost radical in that exchange, quietly placed inside a story that otherwise moves so gently. The mother, through her own recorded voice, is the one who gives her husband permission to love again. Loyalty is not measured by how long someone stays alone, but as love generous enough to want happiness for the person left behind.
FORGIVENESS
Later, on the balcony, wine in hand, Chelsea and Annabelle finally speak honestly – apologizing to each other, admitting how much they have both been carrying alone. Annabelle presses her about the three loves she has never spoken of, worried, genuinely, that her sister has never let herself be happy outside of work. Chelsea insists her job is enough. Work, for Chelsea, functions almost like the treadmill from the very first scene — motion without arrival, effort mistaken for a destination. I think Annabelle sees this more clearly than Chelsea can, because she is standing outside of it, watching her sister run in place for years and calling it a life.
The Dance, and the Ones Who Got Away
Chelsea takes her sister dancing, and it is there, of all places, that Knightley walks in and sees her, entirely unguarded, allowed to feel joy without armor around it. Something in him softens watching her move so freely. But when he approaches, old hurt resurfaces, and she is sharper with him than she means to be. Beneath the sting of their exchange, something quieter passes between them — a hand resting briefly against his chest, meaning more than either of them says aloud.
There is something else in Chelseas’ eyes in that moment, something like the ache of wanting to be truly seen by someone, even while insisting she wants nothing of the kind. Meanness, for Chelsea, is not cruelty. It is armor worn so long it has started to look like personality. She is unkind to the one person who has already seen through her, because being truly seen is far more frightening to her than being disliked.
COLIN
The next morning, Chelsea looks through old photographs. Among them is Colin, from Ireland. She remembers telling him she could not stay, that she had responsibilities waiting for her elsewhere. He asked her to stay anyway. When she left, he told her simply, come back when you’re ready, unless you don’t want to. She was quiet for a long moment before answering, I have never wanted anything more. Colin, I think, represents something quite different from Knightley in the rhythm of this story. He is the past she can romanticize precisely because it stayed unfinished. Knightley, by contrast, is present tense, complicated, already arguing with her about real things. It is far easier to long for someone who only exists in memory than to risk someone standing in front of you, capable of disappointing you all over again. No one wants to be broken twice.
HER SISTER INFLUENCES
When her meeting is postponed once more, Chelsea turns to her sister and suggests something neither of them expected – a vacation. Their father arrives with coffee, an offering of peace, and apologizes for the way he told them about Sherry. He admits, gently, that loving her mother and loving Sherry are not contradictions – only two different chapters of his heart. Chelsea says little, though I hoped, quietly, that she would meet him halfway. He deserves that tenderness. When they tell him they will not be flying home with him, that they are staying to finish what their mother asked of them, and to visit the people from that unfinished year. He tells Chelsea he thinks it is a wonderful idea.
She understands, at last, that when she came home broken all those years ago, she never truly let herself heal. Chelsea has to return to the places that changed her, however frightening that feels. She would not have found the courage alone – but Annabelle is there beside her, as she always has been, quietly steady.
They fly to Dublin together, and as they near the place where it all began, Chelsea recognizes the bus stop where she once waited for Colin. She remembers him arriving, stepping out of the car, looking at her as though no time had passed at all — Chelsea Martin. Your chariot awaits.
And there she is again, standing at the beginning of something she once walked away from, brave enough this time to see where it leads.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I do not know yet whether I believe in love the way this story starts to shape that anyone should. But watching Chelsea gather the courage to go back – to grieve, to forgive, to hope again after telling herself she never would – is a beautiful moment. What strikes me most, looking back over the whole shape of it, is that this was never truly a story about lost love. It is a story about a woman learning that grief and love are not opposites fighting for the same space in her chest.
Perhaps that is the truest kind of hope there is: not certainty, but the willingness to stay a little longer, to open one more recording, to stand at one more bus stop, and breathe.
