NCIS Season 24 is almost here! We already have some details and goodies about it, and we can’t wait to know more! So, if you don’t want to miss anything, here’s everything we know about NCIS Season 24.
Who Is Returning for NCIS Season 24?
Fortunately, almost all of the cast members are returning for NCIS Season 24! So expected returning main cast members include:
- Sean Murray as Special Agent Timothy McGee.
- Wilmer Valderrama as Special Agent Nicholas “Nick” Torres.
- Brian Dietzen as Dr. Jimmy Palmer.
- Diona Reasonover as Forensic Scientist Kasie Hines.
- Katrina Law as Special Agent Jessica Knight.
- Gary Cole as Special Agent Alden Parker.
And we also have a surprise return! Tony DiNozzo is officially coming back! Michael Weatherly will return as a recurring guest star for a significant arc spanning the season. And yes, this comes after he already stepped back into the role for NCIS: Tony & Ziva, where he reunited with Cote de Pablo.
That reunion naturally raises the question of whether de Pablo could make her own return to the mothership series. So far, there’s no confirmation that Ziva will be back alongside Tony. However, showrunner Steven D. Binder confirmed that in their universe, Tali is now just a few hours away, attending boarding school, and Ziva is with her.
Whether that situation eventually brings Ziva back into the orbit of NCIS agents remains an open question. For now, there’s no word on whether her path will actually cross with the team again. But one thing seems clear: even if Ziva doesn’t physically return to the NCIS team just yet, her presence will still be felt.

What Happened at the End of NCIS Season 23?
In the Season 23 finale, Deputy Director Gabriel LaRoche made no secret of the fact that he wants the NCIS Director position, and his plan involves clearing the late Vance’s name from the false charges against him so that he can step in as the hero and secure the job.
Vance himself also returned to the finale, with Rocky Carroll reprising his role through a series of flashbacks involving his daughter, Kayla. In the present day, Kayla found herself pulled into NCIS’ latest investigation because of the private operation she had been running on the side. Then she discovered a note from her father with a simple message: “Follow your own path.” For Kayla, those words provided the support she needed to move forward with her project and make the decision to step away from NCIS.
Meanwhile, McGee’s family was at the center of the finale’s biggest cliffhanger. His son, Mateo, visited the NCIS offices under the apparent pretense of eventually working there, but something immediately felt off: there was no record of his internship application.
Torres became suspicious when he found Mateo at a workstation and confronted him about what he was doing there. That was when Mateo revealed that he had a gun. He warned Torres to turn around and walk away because “they could be watching,” before reaching for the weapon. Torres tried to stop him, but the episode cut away just seconds before a gunshot rang out.
Naturally, that left us with one very big question heading into Season 24: who was shot, and why was Mateo carrying a gun in the first place?
What Will Happen in NCIS Season 24?
The Season 24 premiere will pick up with the fallout from that shooting, although we already know it won’t end with a death. Binder confirmed that someone was hit by the bullet, but ruled out a fatal outcome, explaining that he had already had enough of killing characters during the previous season.
Mateo’s actions will also be explained, and everything we know so far suggests that McGee’s son isn’t secretly an evil mastermind. Binder pointed to Mateo’s fear and his warning that “they could be watching” as signs that he has gotten himself in far deeper than he intended. Season 24 will explore the problems between a father and son.
The new season will also return to Kayla’s story in some form. Binder confirmed that the character will be involved next season, whether through an on-screen appearance or simply a mention. LaRoche, on the other hand, shouldn’t expect quite the same level of attention if he does get the Director position. Binder has indicated that viewers won’t be getting another Director who is as involved with the team as Vance was.
And then there’s Tony DiNozzo.
According to the official Season 24 premiere description, the team will be dealing with the aftermath of the shooting while investigating a new threat against the Secretary of the Navy. That’s when an unexpected ally arrives in Washington: Tony, who is back in D.C. to expand his private security company, Salus Mondiale, with a satellite office.
His return will also acknowledge what happened in NCIS: Tony & Ziva, rather than pretending the series never existed. Binder has confirmed that there is a connection between that story and the main NCIS canon, so Tony’s return won’t erase the events we saw there.
Instead, Tony will come back as someone who has changed while still being unmistakably DiNozzo. He’s still the man we know, but becoming a father has given him a different perspective and a little more maturity. Season 24 will get to explore that version of Tony as he finds himself pulled into an NCIS case that feels very much like home—even after everything that has changed.

It’s official! NCIS Season 24 premieres Tuesday, Oct. 6 on CBS. Tuesday night will be NCIS night, with the original show airing at 8 PM ET/PT, followed by the new NCIS: New York and the returning NCIS: Origins. And we can’t wait!
