In an effort to build a space for queer people like myself, every Tuesday I’ll be posting opinion pieces, listicals, reviews, and more focused on the LGBT community (and occasionally about the Latinx/WOC community since I am Latinx.) Welcome to Queerly Not Straight!
From My, My, My to Youth and Bloom, Troye Sivan has transformed the scene when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation. He isn’t afraid to show that he likes men, wants to have complex relationships with them, and wants to connect with others through his songs. He’s a brilliant young artist and because of that he’s our first LGBTQ+ artist in a music series here at Queerly Not Straight! So sit back…wait, no. Get up, get moving, and celebrate the talent that is Troye Sivan!
1. Wild
One sentence explaining why we love this song: Most heart breaking and beautiful part of the Blue Neighborhood trilogy that deserves all the re-watches and all the feels.
Favorite Lyrics:
Leave this blue neighborhood
Never knew loving could hurt this good, oh
And it drives me wild
‘Cause when you look like that
I’ve never ever wanted to be so bad, oh
It drives me wild
2. My, My, My!
One sentence explaining why we love this song: It’s the kind of bop that leaves you dancing, wanting more, and like you’ve gone through a religious experience as Troye Sivan finally blooms and becomes the man he’s always wanted to be.
Favorite Lyrics:
Shine on, diamond
Don’t make me wait another day
‘Cause passion is passion
You know it just as well as me
Now, let’s stop running from love
Running from love
Let’s stop, my baby
3. Postcard
One sentence explaining why we love this song: We can feel the love and missing each other that is going on in every second of this song because of Troye Sivan’s beautiful words, voice, and delicate face.
Favorite Lyrics:
Now I don’t sleep unless your body’s on me
I won’t feel right until we can be
Underneath everything that’s between, yeah
I’m undone about to burst at my seams
‘Cause I am picturing you beside me
So let me be everything that you need, yeah
4. Bloom
One sentence explaining why we love this song: Only BAMF’s have the capability of writing a whole song about bottoming while making it look and feel like the most heart touching song in his entire discography.
Favorite Lyrics:
Take a trip into my garden
I’ve got so much to show ya
The fountains and the waters
Are begging just to know ya
And it’s true, baby
I’ve been saving this for you, baby
5. My Happy Little Pill
One sentence explaining why we love this song: It hits on topics of mental health (which I know too much about) and the meds (this too) that we need now and everyday from here on out.
Favorite Lyrics:
My happy little pill
Take me away
Dry my eyes
Bring colour to my skies
My sweet little pill
Tame my hunger
Light within
Numb my skin
Like a rock I float
Sweat and conversations seep into my bones
Four walls are not enough
I’ll take a dip into the unknown, unknown
6. Youth
One sentence explaining why we love this song: This song feels like a glowing and hypnotic dream I have no desire to wake up from.
Favorite Lyrics:
My youth
My youth is yours
Trippin’ on skies, sippin’ waterfalls
My youth
My youth is yours
Run away now and forevermore
My youth
My youth is yours
The truth so loud you can’t ignore
My youth, my youth, my youth
My youth is yours
