Fangirlish writers adore their fictional characters. We all have our favorites from a variety of television shows especially. So in a fit of genius or insanity because we are all fannishly busy stressing over making sure readers have preview guides, recaps and a multitude of opinions on these television universes; now we’re going to combine our passion for reading with fangirling TV — by figuring out what our favorite characters would be reading and why you should be reading those books. Not only that, Fangirlish created a Goodreads account and we will be opening up the discussion there and taking suggestions for which fictional persons you would like bookishly profiled.
Simon Lewis from Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series, and from the new hit television series Shadowhunters, is the nerdiest supernatural creature you will ever meet. He’s into comics, movies, Dungeons and Dragons, and basically everything geeky.
I’m sure he reads lots of books, too. His life might be a little crazy these days, but if anyone can find time to read while saving the world, it’s Simon Lewis. Here’s my best attempt at figuring out what Simon reads in his spare time.
- The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien. There is no way Simon didn’t pick up this trilogy. The Lord of the Rings has everything – fantasy, adventure, and one of the most intriguing worlds in fiction. Simon probably read the trilogy, re-read it a few times, saw the movies, then read The Hobbit and The Silmarillion. In fact, Simon probably owns multiple copies of all the books, a few maps of Middle Earth and the extended editions of all the movies, including all three parts of The Hobbit.
- Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson. Simon loves superheroes. We know he’s a huge comic book fan. But after everything he’s been through and all the injustices he’s faced at the hands of the nephilim, he probably appreciates a more pessimistic view of what happens to people when they’re given superpowers. A fast-paced story of regular humans banding together to take down the evil superheroes that have enslaved the world is something Simon Lewis would certainly be able to enjoy at this point in his life.
- Dracula by Bram Stoker: Simon hasn’t been a vampire for very long, but he sure knows a lot about them. We’re guessing he learned that from the classics, with the oldest and most famous vampire book he could find. He might not be so enamored with the story since his rise from the dead, but probably views it as more of a life (unlife?) advice book. After all, he might appreciate some tips on how to handle vampirism.
- A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. What can I say? Simon’s a fan of high fantasy, and the A Song of Ice and Fire series is one of the best in the genre. I’ll bet he tore through these books in no time, and is eagerly awaiting the next installment (whenever it will come).
- Armada by Ernest Cline. Simon has always believed that his experience playing Dungeons and Dragons can come in handy on his epic adventures – a sentiment that is not always echoed by his peers. Armada explores a world in which gamers get to become heroes, based on their knowledge of the video game world that suddenly comes to life around them. For Simon, this would be the ultimate wish fulfillment, as well as proof that geekiness can be useful to heroes. He probably shoved it in Jace’s face and forced him to read it just to prove a point.
