Every aspect of New Amsterdam is only getting better and better, particularly the DamFam in season two of the NBC medical drama. Social media has affectionately dubbed the cast, crew, and fanbase of the show the “DamFam” as a sign of love and unity. But what makes the DamFam so great? Is the acting, the fans, or the writing? We happen to think it’s a little bit of all of the above.
Don’t worry, we’re going to break this down.

The Writing
One of the qualities that set New Amsterdam apart from other medical dramas are the stories. There are medical plots but they aren’t the main focus which is refreshing. Do you know what else the writers aren’t putting in the middle that’s pretty cool? Relationship drama. They’ve set us up and we will ship Sharpwin until it sinks taking us with it.
New Amsterdam is based on friendships between people who work together and the relationships between doctors and their patients (how they should be). The writers have created these amazing characters who truly care for each other and their patients and putting them at the center of the series. New Amsterdam is constantly offering hope in even the bleakest of situations and the world could use a little bit more of that.
The Acting

You’re all probably sick of reading about our love for the cast of New Amsterdam but when they’re this good, it’s hard not to keep gushing. Ryan Eggold leads the cast as Dr. Max Goodwin changing the healthcare industry as we know it. Eggold portrays every aspect of his character with excellence from moments of triumph to ones filled with grief.
Eggold’s chemistry with Freema Agyeman (Dr. Helen Sharpe) is outstanding. Agyeman and Eggold have sparks as friends, co-workers, and hopefully someday something more. We are completely in love with Agyeman and her role as Dr. Helen and Dr. Sharpe. She has compassion that brings us to tears constantly but she also gives us laughs that are both unexpected and welcome.

The Supporting Players
Though Agyeman and Eggold are definitely centric to the show but every player shines. Jocko Sims’ Dr. Floyd Reynolds has so many layers we haven’t even begun to unfold. Tyler Labine (Dr. Iggy Frome) and Anupam Kher (Dr. Vijay Kapoor) have become a package deal. They both interact with the other characters well but there’s no denying that Kapoor and Frome are the heart of the series. And, last but not least, Janet Montgomery (Dr. Lauren Bloom) is probably the most complex character and we are only starting to understand her.
The DamFam is composed of everyone involved with the show and all the viewers at home enjoying it. New Amsterdam has achieved a rare thing where the fandom name belongs to the cast and crew along with the fans. The DamFam is all-inclusive! The fans have become part of the supporting players for the show because of their devotion and appreciation to a great show!
New Amsterdam airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
