If there’s anything that I know about His Dark Materials “The Lost Boy,” it’s that Will is Lizzie’s favorite character. Let me backtrack. When I first started reading His Dark Materials, there was a name that kept popping up with Lizzie aka the other half of these reviews for the show. Lizzie couldn’t wait for me to discover/get to know Will. And while I haven’t read the second book in the series to get to know Will, I get to know him now on His Dark Materials.
And I like him. I can already tell that from this one episode.
Will is kind and patient. He has a paranoid mom who is suffering from delusions. (Except this time her thoughts about being followed/watched are real this time around.) He takes care of her when she should be the one taking care of him. And he is constantly bullied at school and called a freak probably for no other reason than him having a mum with mental health issues. And it’s so damn sad.
Nevertheless, I’m excited to get to know Will and how his story ties in with that of Lyra. Because from where I’m standing, their paths seem to be on two completely different tracks. Lyra doesn’t have a caring mom, a home that isn’t a giant school, and is on adventure that seems too out there for these two to ever meet but eventually they will. And I can’t wait. Lizzie can’t wait.
Talking about Lyra, can we take a moment to talk about how brave she was in “The Lost Boy”? I wouldn’t do what she did in this episode and I’m an adult. But here you have Lyra, who is becoming more confident with the alethiometer every single day, going out there on her own because she knows that it’s the right thing to do. That takes the kind of courage I don’t think I’ve ever had and I’m so proud to know her and share a name with her.
Finding the Costa kid was the bravest thing I’ve ever seen anyone do on this show. Lyra’s daemon was scared out of his mind and even Iorek didn’t step forward to help her out. It was all up to Lyra and I’m so proud of her for finding the Costa kid and bringing him back. No, it wasn’t what Ma Costa was looking for when she set out to find her missing child, but she is getting something that many families won’t get: closure. And that’s all thanks to Lyra.
This bravery and resilience on the part of Lyra and Will has to be the key on how and why they’ll be brought together. Brilliant minds and all that jazz if I’m being honest. And these two have so much brilliance that Mrs. Coulter and the rest of the lot won’t know what hit them when they start fighting back. Until then, Lyra has to fight to get herself out of the situation that she seems to have found herself in: in the clutches of the very murderers who left a boy to wander and freeze out there on the ice as if he were nothing after they cut his daemon away from him.
Here’s hoping Lyra’s escape is soon because I don’t think I’ll be able to take the tension and the pain of her being seperated from her daemon or more likely “almost” being seperated from her daemon. Until next week, His Dark Materials fam!
