Lock Screen Adorableness
Now, there is some lead up to this one that is also freaking adorable. First of all, Peter showing up at Lara Jean’s house convincing her that she is contractually bound to go to a party with him. Then, the banter between PK and Mr. Covey (no drinking, no drugs, no hands). And then, arriving at the party, preparing to debut themselves socially as a couple, and what better way than to have a photo of each other as your lock screen? We can’t decide what we loved more about this entire scene: LJ’s utterly adorable, shy expression in her photo? Peter’s quirky, oh-so-sexy smirk? Or the photo that came later that Peter would later post to Instagram as ‘BAE’. Let’s just say all of it!
‘You were never second best’
UGH! Our hearts! Of course, as with any love story, there has to be a fall out before the make up can occur. As Peter shows up at her door in an attempt to make amends, drama ensues, but not before Peter gives off a line that melted all of our hearts. Lara Jean mistakenly believed she was second best to Gen all this time, never seeing that Peter only had eyes for her. As she yells at him to go home, exasperated, he replies that she was never second best to him. That was the moment we all wept in our popcorn and dreamed of boys like Peter saying things like that to us.
When Lara Jean Reads Peter’s Letters
The entire story started with love letters. Lara Jean purging her heart and soul onto the page to save herself the risk of real love. But it turned out that she wasn’t the only one to write letters showing her true feelings. As part of their contract, Peter promised to write notes to Lara Jean every day. While she never thought much of them, sister Kitty knew better. Saving the letters, she brought them out at just the right time…showing Lara Jean just how much she meant to Peter. Notes such as ‘I love having a smarty pants fake girlfriend’ and ‘you looked really pretty today’ said so much more than any sonnet or declaration ever could, and we loved it.
Lara Jean Reading Peter his Letter
Again, it all comes back to the letters. This time, however, Lara Jean tells Peter her true feelings, to him. Well, to his back. It is how she sorts through her feelings, but this time she found the courage to tell him how she felt. That she liked him and ‘not in a fake way’. Who knew a lacrosse field could be the setting for such romance?
‘You gonna break my heart, Covey?’
This is definitely a personal fav, and a line that echoes in our heads to this day. All cards on the table, no more ‘fake dating’ or ‘pretending’, Peter and Lara Jean are officially a couple! WOOHOO! And just before their first official ‘relationship’ kiss, he whispers the line ‘You gonna break my heart, Covey?’ that is not only so vulnerable and endearing that our hearts cease to beat, but mega foreshadowing for the upcoming sequels.
There are a million and one reasons why Peter Kavinsky and Lara Jean Covey are one of our favorite book-to-screen ships of all time, but we only had so much room to write. The way he looks at her, the way she takes a chance on a ‘real relationship’ are all the things that young adult romance are built on, and we can’t wait for the second film to come to our Netflix screens February 12!
