Well folks, after what seems like forever, Sophia Bush will finally be gracing our television screens.
While Sophia Bush has had a few guest appearances since her departure as a series regular on Chicago P.D. in 2017, we can’t wait to see her on a weekly basis on the new CBS drama, Good Sam. This series will follow Dr. Samantha Griffith as she takes on a leadership position at her hospital after her father falls into a coma. However, her father awakes, leading to “a clash of family wills between old guard and new methods in a life-and-death business” according to the series description.
As a die-hard One Tree Hill fan, we have long awaited the chance to see Sophia Bush in a leading role within a television series. Yes, she was a main cast member of Chicago P.D. but it just feels a little bit more special to know that she’s number one on the call sheet this time around.
So while we eagerly await the show’s premiere in January 2022, let’s talk about some of the reasons why everyone should tune in to this new medical drama.
1. Sophia Bush
I think I’ve made myself pretty clear in that I love Sophia Bush (and if you don’t then you need to reassess.) However, I’m excited to see Sophia Bush in Good Sam not just because I’m a big Brooke Davis fan.
When it comes to the success of a television series, We’re a firm believer that the show is only as strong as its lead character and the actor who plays them. If a show is literally titled after a particular character, then they better put a lot of effort into making sure that character is worth spending forty minutes of your day watching. And while we’re a huge fan of finding new Hollywood talent, it makes me even more excited to watch a new show when we know it’s going to be in good hands.
Sophia Bush is an extraordinary actress and she demonstrated that throughout nine seasons of One Tree Hill. While the material she was given was oftentimes very soapy, she did an amazing job with it. If you happen to be reading this article and have never seen One Tree Hill, we implore you to do so. Or at least watch this scene which is from the season three finale and is the perfect example of Sophia Bush’s exceptional acting ability.
We think (or we hope) that Good Sam will allow her to shine as she once did in the old CW series. While she gave great performances in her roles since, something tells us that a medical and family drama will be the perfect place to prove once again that she deserves all the success that she has gotten.
2. Who Doesn’t Love A Good Medical Drama?
Yes, there are plenty of medical dramas out there but we want something fresh. For a while, The Resident presented itself as a fun, new medical drama that we could really invest my time into. However, earlier this year, they, unfortunately, killed off one of the main characters, and ever since then, I haven’t been able to watch it.
So this point is more of a personal reason as we’re just craving a new medical show to sink my teeth into. Good Sam feels like a mix of The Resident and Grey’s Anatomy which sounds like a pretty good combo to us. My one hope is that it does what I think The Resident has done a great job in which is having emotional patient stories.
We believe what sets a good medical drama apart from the mediocre ones is the emphasis that is put on the patients. While the doctors are an important part of the story, seeing how they interact and care for their patients is just as vital. Some of Grey’s Anatomy’s best episodes involve an emotional patient storyline (remember those two strangers who got impaled by a pole?)
It’s a good thing that Good Sam has all these examples of what to do and not to do when it comes to a standout medical drama.
3. It’s Family Time
I have to admit, I’m a sucker when it comes to father-daughter relationships on television. Don’t ask me why because it’s not like I have some deep-seated emotional trauma with my father. For whatever reason, I love seeing the dynamic between a parent and child unfold.
When we first get a glimpse of these two Dr. Griffiths, it appears that they don’t quite get along. In fact, it looks like they often butt heads and that their relationship might not be all sunshine and rainbows. But those are the best kind of relationships if you ask me.
We hate to keep comparing Good Sam to other medical shows especially since we haven’t even seen it yet. But we keep thinking that this show is what Grey’s Anatomy would have been if Ellis Grey didn’t have Alzheimer’s. Honestly, the thought of having my father look over my shoulder as I work sounds awful and so I can’t begin to imagine what it’s like for Samantha Griffith. Not only does she have to deal with the egotism that comes when your father is a surgeon but she probably has to fight every day to prove that she belongs at that hospital too.
We’re very curious to see how their relationship will continue to evolve throughout the first few episodes and (hopefully) multiple seasons. Will they continue to be at odds with each other? Or will they stand side-by-side as fellow doctors? Only time will tell.
We’re also interested to see what the relationships between the rest of the cast of characters will be like. Obviously, the show isn’t all about The Griffiths and so having a group of other characters that you can care about and follow along with is key. While we don’t have a lot of information to go off of on these other characters, I’m hoping that they’re just as intriguing as the father-daughter duo.
4. Romance
You can’t have a medical drama without some romance, am I right?
If it’s like any medical series, they’ll most likely be inter-office relationships between the doctors. And from the few seconds we saw in the promo, it appears that we’ll be getting that between Samantha Griffith and another doctor, Caleb.
While we didn’t get a lot of indication of how much romance there will be in the show, it’s safe to assume that they’ll give us just enough to leave us wanting more. I, personally, need a new medical drama relationship ever since Emily Van Camp left The Resident after four seasons and left me heartbroken. Not sure if we’ll get that same level of romance between Samantha and Caleb, but one can hope and dream.
Or maybe there is a couple that we don’t even know about that will steal our hearts. Either way, we’re looking forward to seeing whether they’ll deliver a new pairing we can give our heart to.
Good Sam will premiere on CBS on Wednesday, January 5 at 10/9c.
