Every story is a journey. It seems like the days in between from when situations started to where they are, somethings seem inconsequential. But nothing really is. Every decision, every choice, changes you.
In 2050, Sophie is sitting on the couch, still talking to her son, telling him the big story of how she met his father. He’s okay to skip to the destination, but she says he needs live in the moment.
And that’s a lesson we could all take in. The whole living in the moment thing. It’s something that Sophie isn’t good at.
After the Brooklyn Bridge walk, she backslides. She had this sense of empowerment, but when she got home, she started rereading old texts from Ian. She knows that she’s a mess, but she is hurting.
Valentina being the friend that she is – she’s not standing for this. She comes in, catches her on the phone and knows what she’s doing. Sophie isn’t really good at the coverup – she says no, she’s watching porn. But Valentina knows she’s afraid of porn, to which Sophie says that’s not true, she’s afraid of the government tracking her search history (which is really fucking valid).

Can I tell you how much I love that these two are working out to Jane Fonda? Jane Fonda workouts were the shit and a lot of work. While doing their work out, Valentina asks Sophie what her plans are for the night.
Sophie wants to stay in and organize the darkroom closet. Yes, that’s code for wallow, like I am pretty sure that we all have our own code for that. But Valentina know that means that she’s going to stare at pictures of Ian and listen to Drops of Jupiter. It’s her comfort song and there is no shame in that. Mine is How Do I Live, by Leann Rhimes.
But there is no listening to Drops of Jupiter in her future, because Valentina, like the boss ass best friend that she is, tells her they are going out. She got them on the list for a new club – FOMO. There is no such thing as FOMO at FOMO.
Valentina isn’t accepting no for an answer. After all, she’s going to need a good night out after she breaks up with Charlie.
Valentina and Charlie moved really fast. Like really fast. It’s like whiplash fast. Even I will admit that one. But girl, you need to communicate, not alienate.

Valentina says she has to break up with him – he’s smothering her. That morning she told him best New York bagels were in Jersey to have time to herself. Personally, that should be a crime, but I know New York has bigger things to deal with. Sophie says she can’t break things off because just the night before she told her how obsessed she was with him. Valentina says she’s conflicted – he is fun, sweet and hot and he does this thing with his tongue – they call it lucky charming.
Be conflicted girl but make wise choices. Valentina says fine and says that she can feel them growing, so much so that she feels she probably made good coffee. Spoiler alert: she didn’t.
Sophie has the perfect way to fix things. She says Charlie just needs to make friends. After all he knows no one in New York.
Look New York is one of the loneliest places in the world, but it can also make you feel a lot. Making friends is sometimes hard, because it’s hard and easy to met people also. So when Valentina suggests a Grindr account, I can kinda get on board with that.
I understand it.
Sophie decides to DM Jesse and ask them to come out with them that night. It’s a plausible thing – introducing friends to your friends. Its a way to make friends.
Jesse, Ellen, and Sid are working on his bar. Sid has a dream for his bar. He wants regulars. He wants it to be a place people come back to. And he wants to be hip.
In the midst of painting, Jesse gets a DM from Sophie, inviting them out. He’s ready to say no, to stick to the routine. Sid and Ellen though, they are ready to talk him out of it. Ellen wants to have her first big New York night. Sid is like she’s interested to you, and Jesse doesn’t believe it.
But the thing is that Sid is like I am spending too much money on Kleenex. You need to go out. Knowing Jesse is going to town on himself – not something I wanted to know – but hey we’ve all been there. You can say that you haven’t, but masturbation is nothing to be ashamed of.
At the club, of course Ian texts. He sends Sophie a pic of his deckhand looking like Jason Mamoa. Look Ian, you’ve lost the right for inside jokes, so keep them to yourself. You’re playing with emotions and that’s fucked up. Sophie and Ian need to let each other be, because right now it’s too fresh.
Goes to show you that emotional connections can be strong, even if you’ve only met once.

FOMO
Valentina is determined to get Charlie friends, so she tells the bouncer this is a set up, so please treat them right. She ain’t giving cash though, which is a little bit of an issue. That and Sid overhears her saying its a set up, so he thinks that this is really a set up with Sophie.
It’s cute to see Jesse get so excited and sad because you know that he’s gonna be disappointed.
Everyone is having fun. Especially Ellen. She really is taking it all in stride and loving have so much energy. So as she goes off to have fun, and you wish that you could have the courage that she does.
Jesse takes his swing at Sophie and she stops and sees the guy that is interested sitting in front of her. Living in the moment isn’t easy for Sophie and she ends up standing up Jesse because she sees a Jason Mamoa look alike and she wants to get a picture and send to Ian.
SOPHIE!!! Stay in the moment. Even Valentina tries to bring her back to the moment, but she just tells Valentina screw being mature. So Valentina is going to break up with Charlie. Sophie is going to take the picture. This is how they will learn to make wise decisions and crush dicks like Jane Fonda.
Only you aren’t supposed to take pics in the club so Sophie gets kicked out. This leads to Jesse looking for her and remarking that this is the worst set up ever, and Valentina having to admit that this wasn’t a setup for Jesse. Sophie isn’t ready for a setup, she’s still obsessed with Ian.
Jesse is disappointed. All the dudes leave and go back to Sids bar.
Valentina and Charlie break up. She tells him she feels smothered. She tells him he’s great, but he’s always there. He’s like if this is how you deal with tiniest wrinkle then they should go separate ways. He can’t believe that he lucky charmed her twice that AM.
Lucky bitch got it twice.
Sometimes talks with your best friend are the most important thing that you can do. Valentina tells her that she broke up with Charlie, and that she could have just communicated. She had thought of it, but I just didn’t wanna do it. Because if you tell a guy what you need and he does it then you have to do it. Valentina only wants to do what she wants. Sophie is like now she can.

Sometimes realizing that you made a mistake is the worst place to be. It’s also the place that you need to be sometimes – humbled.
Charlie being himself isn’t a bad thing. Jesse and Sid gave him another chance, and they actually will get along. I see the beginning of a great friendship here.
Valentina and Sophie show up, bringing an Essex Bagel for Charlie. It’s where she should have sent him. Living together is too much for Charlie and Valentina, but it doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t ease into things. However the two of them need to be more traditional.
Ellen returns to the bar drunk and high on life. She had the best night, and even though she was rejected constantly, she loved it. She struck out so many times, but she wasn’t sad about it. She was happy. Ellen says she is happy cause even though all these women didn’t want to give me their numbers many more are out there. Sophie will drink to that.
Sophie and Jesse need to talk. She apologizes, doesn’t want him to be uncomfortable. He is, but she tells him that she’s a mess and she knows that he’s been through a lot. New York is this place that can make you feel hopeless and alone and not special and she doesn’t want that for him because she sees how special he is.
He says he’s a mess too. She’s like maybe they can be friends who are messes instead of friends who try to date. And as they both agree to that you see something in both of them put at ease. It’s crazy how when you find your place with people, you find a comfort in it.
Especially when they get the jukebox to work and play their comfort song and it’s the same as yours.
Sometimes you don’t need to send the text, you just need to see the world around you and live in it.
