We’re definitely looking forward to the Barbie movie. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as well as America Ferrera in a movie together? Yes please. But that doesn’t mean that we’ve forgotten the first person cast as Barbie... Amy Schumer.
This is why we rarely trust it when anyone says “scheduling conflicts” because we know that it tends to be something else and something will come out.
Amy addressed the real reason that she left the production in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“They definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,” she admitted to the outlet.
The truth was that her and the studio were miles apart in what they wanted. Schumer and writing partner Kim Caramele had written Barbie as an “ambitious inventor.”
The studio asked that Barbie’s invention be a high heel made of Jell-O. Hard pass.
“The idea that that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal.’ ” she added.
It was partially because of her career feeling stagnant and her want for something more that and Barbie that she left UTA in 2018.
“I loved those guys, but I just didn’t feel support for, like, ‘This is who Amy is and she’s not going to be this other thing.’ I felt like I was disappointing my team by not being Barbie.”
Well, we know that Amy fights for what is right and we’re sure that she did what was right for her and that we applaud.
Barbie has been in the works for quite sometime. Greta Gerwig is directing from a script that she co-wrote with her husband Noah Baumbach. The project moved to Warner Bros. in 2018.
Barbie is set to start production in early this year in London, with a planned 2023 theatrical release.
