All the rumors and riddles paid off! Joseph Morgan will return to the TVD Universe as Klaus Mikaelson for the Legacies series finale, airing this Thursday on The CW.
The actor has teased his involvement with Legacies since May. Since then, Morgan tweeted riddles that spelled out words and phrases like “FINALE” and “HE WILL RISE.” The latter is especially sneaky considering Morgan tagged DC Titans and Brother Blood — a villainous character he will soon play on the superhero drama. It’s intriguing because, since The Originals series finale, Klaus Mikaelson is dead and could rise from the ashes.
Also, Morgan shared a video on social media, recording another riddle. This one spelled out “LEGACIES.” Many other riddles followed until Morgan tweeted, “If you had the chance to say one last goodbye to the child you loved more than anything, would you take it?” This time the actor tagged Legacies.
The timing of his tweet couldn’t be a coincidence, either, since Morgan posted it before Legacies 4×19, “This Can Only End in Blood,” aired. Everything was coming together, and fans were hot on Morgan’s clue trail. It only encouraged The Originals fans’ theories when Morgan posted the same message on Instagram with a suspicious photo. It looked like Morgan was in the same outfit Klaus Mikaelson wore in The Originals series finale — the outfit Klaus died in alongside his brother Elijah.

As if those posts didn’t all but confirm Morgan’s appearance on the young-adult drama, Morgan outwardly confirmed his guest appearance during an Instagram Live, which is now available to watch on his feed. Morgan said, “I don’t know if I’ve got permission to do this. I don’t know if I need it, to be honest with you. Regardless, we’re here now, so I’m going to tell you a couple of things: You are going to see Klaus again in the final-ever episode of Legacies. Just for a fleeting moment. That’s it; you heard it here first.”
As if he could anticipate the feed’s reaction to such a bombshell reveal, Morgan spoke to fans who may be wondering if his return could also have anything to do with a ship. While Morgan didn’t explicitly confirm which ship he referenced, it’s easy to deduce that he likely meant Klaus Mikaelson and Caroline Forbes — one of TVDU’s most beloved ships.
“This was never ever about a ship for me or for Klaus. This is about family. Family is power. This is about a father and his daughter, their relationship, what he feels he owes to her. That’s what this is about. So there was a very secret, very clandestine scene recorded,” he continued.
So, Klaus Mikaelson’s final scene in the TVD Universe will focus on his relationship with Hope Mikaelson. This ending fits both characters since living with Klaus’ legacy has been quite the journey for Hope. Only recently has she accepted the good and bad that come with being her father’s daughter. While that may always be an internal dialogue, Hope has a sore spot from her father’s passing that could be healed (at least a bit) with one more interaction.

The Originals fans will remember that Hope got one last, bittersweet goodbye with her mother, Hayley Marshall, during 5×12, “The Tale of Two Wolves.” That scene confirmed Hayley is at peace.
As for Klaus, early in Legacies, The Necromancer told Hope, “As for your father, he watches over you every day. He did die with love in his heart, and he doesn’t regret his choice. But he won’t find peace until you do.” That sentiment will likely come full circle in the Legacies series finale, especially since Hope is wearing her necklaces in the promo video.
Someone — a Mikaelson — will need to bring those back to her. Hope gave them to her aunt Rebekah Mikaelson at the end of Legacies 4×05, “I Thought You’d Be Happier to See Me,” to distance herself from her family further. The necklaces reappeared on Legacies 4×15, “Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found,” when the family let Hope decide what to do with her father’s ashes. Ultimately, she wanted them to be with her.
Maybe Rebekah or Freya brings Hope’s necklaces and Klaus’ ashes to Mystic Falls now that the dust from Hope’s fight with a literal god has settled. Nevertheless, the context of Klaus’ reappearance remains unknown. However, according to the Necromancer and The Vampire Diaries and The Originals‘ endings, Klaus should be in limbo. Hell no longer exists, and Kaus won’t find peace until Hope does, so limbo is his best option.

With Landon as the Ferryman, could he work magic to get Hope one final moment with her dad? Or, will this moment come about entirely different? Only time will tell. Regardless, Morgan spoke fondly about his final scene as the notorious anti-hero in a video he recorded before shooting his Legacies scene.
“Ever since I left The Originals, it hasn’t left me, and Niklaus Mikaelson has always been there in my head and in my heart,” Morgan said. “And you guys have been incredible. You haven’t let it go. You know I’ve been asked again and again to make an appearance on Legacies, and it never felt right… until now. Now it feels right. I hope you enjoy this and feel as passionate about it as I do. This one is for you guys,” he said.
Joseph Morgan played the werewolf-vampire hybrid on The Vampire Diaries before moving on to the Mikaelson family’s spinoff, The Originals. Morgan joins the club of TVDU actors to appear on all three shows: Matthew Davis, Riley Voelkel, Claire Holt, Nathaniel Buzolic, and Candice King. King lent her voice to read a letter from Caroline Forbes to her daughter Lizzie in Legacies 3×03, “Salvatore: The Musical.”
Other TVDU actors who have reprised their roles on Legacies include Zach Roerig, Steven R. McQueen, Chris Wood, Demetrius Bridges, Rebecca Breeds, Summer Fontana, Jodi Lyn O’Keefe, Lily Rose Smith, and Charles Michael Davis.
