Chainsaw Man. Everyone’s heard of this anime, right? Maybe you saw someone cosplaying at New York Comic Con with a chainsaw on their head. Maybe you’ve passed by the manga it’s based on in a store. Or maybe you’ve seen it trending on Twitter. If it’s STILL not ringing a bell, that’s fine. We’re here to convince you to see it if you weren’t already intrigued by a man made of chainsaws.
Created by manga artist and writer Tatsuki Fujimoto, Chainsaw Man tells the story of Denji, a broke teen that hunts demons for some unsavory characters. He’s barely making it by, struggling every day to put food on the table. Fortunately, he’s not alone. Denji has Pochita by his side. His cute doggo-like demon who…kind of has a chainsaw coming out of his head. This is where our five very important reasons for you to start watching come in. Because yeah, Denji turns into Chainsaw Man and that’s neat and all. But these are the real reasons you should be watching!
1. Because Pochita is Denji’s best friend

2. Because Pochita is an Active Listener

3. Because Pochita has the cutest bark

4. Because Pochita is your friend til the end

5. Because of Pochita’s insightful words of wisdom

There’s no way you’re not convinced to watch now.
Besides an adorable-looking pet chainsaw and the fact that this anime is basically the story about a boy and his dog, this anime series is going to have much more to offer than just his tiny barks. Set in a world where devils are manifested by the fear of something, Chainsaw Man will show you how your fears evolve when you’re not looking.
And don’t even get us started on how it looks visually. It’s got the signature look of a modern-day anime. But it has a man who turns into a Chainsaw Man. That means that there’s going to be blood, gore, and all sorts of monsters that come into contact with Denji and Pochita. And the animation didn’t hold back or shy away from what makes it different. It leaned into it.
If you like My Hero Academia, this anime is full of a cast of characters with different powers and backstories. Together, they make up the Public Safety Devil Squad, who use their powers to be the heroes of their city, much like how a superhero would. And Denji is at the heart of that.
Say Jujutsu Kaisen is your cup of tea. You miss the ragtag group of students who are just figuring out how to defeat curses. This series can hold you off until season two of Jujutsu Kaisen arrives. It has a band of misfits and a dumb but very kind protagonist at the center of it all. Denji is also controlled by something much more sinister like Yuji Itadori is. But, both have silly personalities that audiences have grown to love via Fujimoto’s manga.
Or, perhaps you’re missing Noragami, the premise of this anime is similar. There are creatures out in society who feed on people’s fears and manifest into dangerous beings. However, these devils are not defeated with a holy sword. Instead, it’s more of a devil-fight-devil world as some of the characters use these manifestations of fear to fight others. And despite Pochita’s extremely cute exterior, he is as fierce as they come with the chainsaw to prove it.
Chainsaw Man airs on Hulu and Crunchyroll on Tuesdays. Make sure to catch it or FOMO might become a devil you have to face.
