Blumhouse, MGM+, and Paramount are dropping another new horror movie on us next year! Did someone order a bunch of creepy children with a side of “…the heck is the abyss doing in the woods?!” Apparently so because that’s what we’re getting in There’s Something Wrong with the Children.
Let’s break down a little why this movie has us intrigued!
First up, we’ve got an interesting cast for this horror flick. Zach Gilford of Friday Night Lights and Midnight Mass fame plays Ben. We’ve got Alisha Wainwright of Raising Dion and Shadowhunters as Margaret. Rounding out our adult cast are Amanda Crew (Silicon Valley) and Carlos Santos (Gentefied). Our cast of creepy kids includes newcomers Brielle Guiza and David Matle.
Second, every horror fan has a couple of tropes that scare the daylights out of them. For me, it’s possession movies and scary children. It looks like There’s Something Wrong with the Children might be a little of both! Did something possess those kids in the abyss? Did they just get warped? Either way, I’m probably going to be saying “NOPE!” quite a bit.
Third, we’ve got a solid director and writing staff. Roxanne Benjamin is in the director’s chair for this film. If her name is familiar, it’s because she’s probably directed an episode or two of your favorite spooky TV show. She’s worked on Creepshow, Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Nancy Drew. The writers for There’s Something Wrong with the Children are T.J. Cimfel and David White. These guys have worked together on V/H/S Viral and Intruders. These folks are some real up-and-comers in the horror genre and I’m excited to see what they do with the project.

A Fresh Take on Classic Horror
There are many things about this weekend-in-the-woods-gone-awry that lean into classic horror elements. The kids are singing “Ring Around the Rosie” (which already is about death) at a hauntingly slow pace, have unexplained bloody noses, and a crazed glint in their eyes. Also, it’s hard not to notice that the font used at the end is the same as Stranger Things, which is a spoof on a classic Stephen King title font.
All-in-all, There’s Something Wrong with the Children looks like a fun and creepy movie night. Grab your horror movie buddy, pop some corn, and settle in for what looks like a fun horror flick full of jump scares, and for me, nightmare fuel. Still not convinced? Check out the trailer below!
There’s Something Wrong with the Children will be available on digital and on-demand services on January 17, 2023. There’s Something Wrong with the Children will be available for streaming on MGM+ on March 17, 2023.
