Mythic Quest 3×10 “Buffalo Chicken Pizza” is a season finale that encapsulates so much of what makes this show great. The finale was always going to be a gut punch in the best possible way, and it delivered. So many characters have been at a crossroads, and it is time to pick a path. Through it all, the show never loses sight of the fact that it is an endearing workplace comedy — and so much more.
Poppy at the End of the Universe
No one knows how to break down quite as spectacularly as Poppy Liwanag (Charlotte Nicdao). Seriously, this woman has losing her crap down to an art. It’s a testament to the show’s brilliance that this isn’t portrayed as pathetic and/or just “women be crazy.” Rather, Poppy is allowed to feel her deep, human emotions, and be loved and supported by those around her.
Everyone reaches their breaking point. Sometimes, you just need to go into a candy coma and lay on the floor for a bit before moving on. Thankfully, Poppy is given the time she needs to process her emotions. Once she is, she’s able to get back up and do what needs to be done. She’s only able to get there, though, after she’s felt her feelings to the fullest extent.
MQ Movie: Dead In the Water
Mythic Quest 3×10 “Buffalo Chicken Pizza” definitely ends the dream of an MQ-based movie. Perhaps this is for the best, since it was never going anywhere good. David’s (David Hornsby) emotional investment in this project makes this story work, though. As misguided as it was, this was something David was invested in, and it was nice seeing him do something other than be a terrible boss.
If there’s a benefit to the loss of David’s beloved movie, it’s that Jo (Jessie Ennis) is able to lean into her dramatic nature. This may be one of the most unhinged orchestrated firings of all time. It’s not the end of Jo’s story, not by a long shot. If anything, this is just the start of bigger and better things for this bundle of chaos.
Destinies Collide
Jo and Brad (Danny Pudi) are back together, and it’s a beautiful thing. No workplace is complete without the chaotic energy these two bring. They are both kingmakers in every sense of the word. They recognize greatness (or lack thereof) and firmly attach themselves to natural leaders. Together, they have always been unstoppable.
Mythic Quest 3×10 “Buffalo Chicken Pizza” makes it clear that Studio/Dana is the new game workplace to cheer for. It’s a new take on Mythic Quest’s future. Dana (Imani Hakim) and Rachel (Ashly Burch) haven’t spent a lot of time together this season, which is a shame because they are the definition of the ultimate ship. Both of them had incredibly strong arcs this season. Rachel’s evolution from socialist to greedy capitalist freaking out over a cheque is a strangely relatable one. And Dana has been overlooked this entire series. Now, she’s poised to be the boss herself, and step into her own.
GrimPop: Broken In All the Right Places
Everything about this season of Mythic Quest has been an examination of Poppy and Ian’s (Rob McElhenney) relationship. A lesser show would have used this episode to advance a romantic storyline and would have taken these characters in a new direction. However, the show is not afraid to show how deep platonic love is. It’s so incredibly validating to see friendship, especially between a man and a woman, be portrayed as just as valid as any romantic relationship.
This episode is proof that Poppy and Ian still need one another to fully realize their respective potentials. If their vision is to be realized, it needs to be realized with both of them using their talents. Poppy is the builder, and Ian sees the whole picture. While getting them back to work for MQ may be a tiny bit contrived, if that’s where they are meant to go, then so be it.
Mythic Quest’s season finale captures the best of this workplace comedy. The show’s heart was so clear throughout. The team’s dynamic is about to shift again, and that may be the best thing for the overall story. With a new season and a spin-off on the horizon, we are in good shape to continue showering these characters with the love they deserve.
Season 3 of Mythic Quest is now available to stream on Apple TV+.
