We watch a lot of TV and movies! And we listen to a lot of music, podcasts, audiobooks…so yeah, we’re fangirling over a lot of things! So, each week we come together to highlight all the feels they give us throughout the week. On these Fangirlish Feels of the Week, there are five categories and many thoughts! Ready?
Here we go!
What You’re Fangirling Over This Week
Amanda W.: I’m more so excited for and looking forward to different things than fangirling this week, but whatever. 2012 Olympic all-around champion Gabby Douglas is returning to competition for the first time since the 2016 Rio Olympics, and she is looking amazing so far from the training footage that’s been shared.
Also, Aaron Tveit fulfills his dream role of Sweeney Todd on the 9th, which is the same day Lola Tung makes her Broadway debut as Eurydice in Hadestown, and I just love that!
Rachel: I’m a Friends fan, so the news that Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer are going to star in an ad together during the Super Bowl was a fun fangirl moment for me this week. Ross and Rachel together again!! They’ll get bonus points if they reference “We were on a break!” And I don’t even watch the Super Bowl, I watch the Puppy Bowl!
Ashley W.: Ming-Na Wen shared a post on Instagram featuring some of the co-stars she reunited with recently at MEGACON Orlando. One of the people was Jeff Ward, who she starred alongside in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Me being an emotional fangirl who feels too much and can cry about anything, their reunion made my Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.-loving heart very happy.
Ashley T.: I am really loving Dynamite Entertainment’s current run of Gargoyles comics. I knew I would have a good time with it because Gargoyles creator, Greg Weisman is at the helm, but good grief, I was not prepared for just how much I would truly love it. Visit your friendly local comic shop and pick up this series. It’s definitely worth your time.
WTF Moment of the Week
Raquel: The poor reading comprehension of this song…which also has symbolism behind it.
Amanda W.: Speaking of Broadway, Boy George debuted as Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge! the Musical this week, and I already wasn’t a fan of this casting because of his history with abuse and assault. To add to that, the official MR! social media accounts shared some footage from Boy George’s debut, and it sure is something.
Not only did the creative team add new songs from him/Culture Club to the show, the performance isn’t up to par. It doesn’t sound good. And why TF does an abuser get his songs in the show when JoJo (of “Leave (Get Out)” and Aquamarine fame — not Siwa), who played Satine last year, didn’t get that same opportunity?
As someone who’s seen MR! five times and grew up listening to JoJo, there are totally songs that easily could’ve fit into the story’s narrative or music!
Ashley T.: David Zaslav of Warner Bros. apparently didn’t even screen Coyote vs. Acme. The film might be deleted forever in the name of a $35 million tax write-off, but what the company will lose is the goodwill of consumers, artists, and filmmakers.
That’s worth much more than $35 million and he can’t even see beyond the write-off. This gets a big WTF from me. All it proves is that he shouldn’t be running a film and television production company because he doesn’t care about art. Who knows what’s next on the chopping block?!
What We’re Listening to This Week
Amanda W.: To celebrate Aaron Tveit Sweeney Todd, I’ve been listening to my favorite covers of his, mainly “All I Ask” and “Che Gelida Manina.”
Rachel: This week, I listened to the latest ep of the “What A Barb” podcast. It’s about Colin and Penelope, my favorite Bridgerton couple, and this week they recorded their reactions and theories about the first season 3 clips we got last week. These girls provide a lot of good insight and really fun observations. Their speculations are wonderful and I have a feeling at least some of them might turn out to be spot on.
Ashley W.: No offense to Hugh Jackman or Zac Efron, but Jeremy Jordan singing The Greatest Showman is gloriously brilliant, and if you haven’t heard him performing those songs, you’re missing out.
Ashley T.: I am a Taylor Swift novice, so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I started with her first album and am working my way to the present. I’m definitely enjoying myself so far. As someone who is a musician, and has dabbled in songwriting, I appreciate her start and where she’s grown to now.
What We Rewatched This Week
Rachel: This week, I got to The Prestige in my Christopher Nolan re-watch. The story is a perfect fit with Nolan’s sensibilities as a director, and I’d love to see him do another period piece that’s further in the past like this one someday.
Ashley W.: The Marvels was added to Disney+ this week, so of course I watched it as soon as I could. I only ever had a chance to watch the film once when it was in theaters, so it was great to finally see it again. It is just as fun and as good of a time as ever, and the flerkitten herding scene set to “Memory” from Cats will forever be absolutely hilarious.
Ashley T.: The Marvels, because of course I did. It’s definitely my comfort movie now. Also, Licorice Pizza, because of course I did. I like to really sit with a film and study it, thus I tend to rewatch films I really enjoy. These are no exceptions.
Badass Character of the Week
Rachel: I feel like I could list Ben on Quantum Leap almost every week, but this week’s ep was a standout in this way, for me. He essentially figured out all the clues on a treasure map and mended a fractured family.
Ashley W.: Every fangirl knows how fun it can be to fantasize, but for those fantasies to become a reality is completely different and very well may not actually be fun. For Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, her fangirl fantasies involve fighting alongside her hero Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.
But imagining yourself as helping your favorite superhero save the world to actually doing just that sounds terrifying. But even with the apprehension and learning that Kamala experiences in The Marvels, she handles herself so well. And being a superhero fangirl turned actual superhero is pretty badass.
Ashley T.: In the same vein as Ashley W., but slightly different, I’m going to say Iman Vellani. I got to catch up with the run of Ms. Marvel she wrote this week, and the fact that she is a great writer, a great actress, and by all accounts, an incredibly kind human, makes her a true badass in my book. We couldn’t ask for a more perfect Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel than her.
