We watch a lot of TV and movies! And we listen to a lot of music, podcasts, audiobooks…so yeah, we’re fangirling over a lot of things! So, each week we come together to highlight all the feels they give us throughout the week. On these Fangirlish Feels of the Week, there are five categories and many thoughts! Ready?
Here we go!
What You’re Fangirling Over This Week
Rachel: This one for me is a tie this week! I’m going back and forth between spiraling over the fact that William Wellington confessed his love to Eliza Scarlet AND KISSED HER on Miss Scarlet and the Duke and spiraling over the first Bridgerton season 3 clip we got.
It was Polin being all cute and funny with LOTS of sexual tension!!! AND there was another few seconds from season 3 in a promo, with Polin looking at each other VERY intensely. Chemistry was FLOWING out of that 2 or 3 seconds, let me tell you. This was a good week for my ships.
Amanda P: I was convinced that Miss Scarlet and the Duke’s flashback episode would be their way of getting around giving us a real William/Eliza kiss for another year, so I was very, very happy to be proven wrong. I may have (definitely did) squealed at the TV.
Also, as someone who has never read the Percy Jackson books nor watched the show, I am Feeling Some Things after seeing the “Do you ever dream about Mom” clip going around, even with the bare minimum of context. Toby Stephens’s facial expressions, good lord.
Ashley T.: You can fangirl over your friends, right? Well, I am. This week, my friend Matthew Justice released physical cartridges of the NES game he programmed last year. Yes, you read that right, NES! If you’re a curmudgeonly retrogamer like me who prefers to play on original hardware whenever possible, now is your chance to play a Jane Austen-themed game on your NES!
You can also play it on Steam or Android like everyone else in the 21st century. It’s called Jane Austen’s 8-Bit Adventure. It’s a platformer that lets you play as Jane Austen while also defeating all of the Jane Austen book villains with your quill and power up by drinking tea. I got to playtest it and it’s easily the most fun I’ve had playing a video game in ages. Worth checking out if you’re into Jane Austen, 8-bit gaming, platformers, or all of the above.
Amanda W.: It feels like forever since there was any new Taron Egerton content — because it has — so I have been thinking about the like three-second clip and one still from Carry On that Netflix released this week. It’s hardly anything, but the crumbs are enough to satisfy Taron Egerton fans at this point. Haha!
Runners up include Aaron Tveit’s new interview/video/photoshoot with Playbill for Sweeney Todd and Jonathan Bailey‘s photoshoot for Orlebar Brown.
Ashley W.: I won’t say much, because not everyone wants or likes spoilers. But all of the behind-the-scenes photos and videos of Daredevil: Born Again makes my Marvel Television-loving heart so happy.
Brittany: I am going to be entirely self-serving and say that I discovered this week that someone in the Mobile Police homicide unit read my story about the city leaving The First 48. I have not stopped geeking out over the fact that someone whose work I have tremendous respect for has read my stuff and was impressed by what I had to say. Sometimes I tend to feel like I’m alone, yelling into a void, and then moments like this remind me I couldn’t be doing anything else.
WTF Moment of the Week
Rachel: Even though it seems like a much better decision for the story than it did in season 3, I’m still amazed that the writers of Miss Scarlet and the Duke sent William away AGAIN. It’s not a good idea to have any episodes without one half of your central ship, guys.
Amanda P. Yep, I’m with Rachel on Miss Scarlet. I get that it was probably due to Stuart Martin’s other filming commitments, but it definitely leaves a gap. Also, I still really miss Moses!
Ashley T.: George R. R. Martin posted on his personal blog this week about anti-fans. The summation is that it’s no longer enough for most folks to have fun talking about the things they enjoy online. We now have to “dance on the graves” of every film that flops, etc. I can’t help but agree with him.
WTF happened to simply talking about the things we love and having civil discussions with those with whom we disagree? I feel his cynicism here, but I also try to work to be the change I want to see in the world. So yes, George, I breathe a sigh and also say WTF to that with you.
Jasmine: Well, for me, it would have to be the additional unseen moment in Spencer and Trinas Paris love scene on General Hospital which appeared in a montage as Trina reminisced about her final days with him before he went overboard the ship and was presumed dead.
That extra moment had Sprina fans asking why it wasn’t shown in the previous episode when the love scene actually happened. That unfortunately seems to be the going trend for GH cutting Sprina moments.
What We’re Listening to This Week
Raquel: This week I listened to the podcast Estirando el Chicle made by and for young people, with interviews full of humor and daily life situations told so that you can’t help but laugh at yourself and your own misfortunes.
Ashley T.: I’m still in my HAIM era. I found an old show they did on YouTube this week from ~2009. There’s only one song that they still play from their pre-signed days and it’s “The Wire.” It was super fascinating to me to hear the differences between this version and the version that made it to Days Are Gone in 2013. What hasn’t changed is the energy they bring to every single live performance. Everything gets left on the stage and I love it.
Ashley W.: I came across an unreleased song by Olivia Rodrigo that was apparently cut from her debut album, “SOUR,” while scrolling on TikTok earlier this week. It’s a fantastic song, and, because of that, I’m kind of also upset I found it. Because now I know it exists but didn’t make the album. But at least it’s been shared with the world still!
What We Rewatched This Week
Rachel: This week was 2002’s Insomnia in my Christopher Nolan re-watch. It’s a very good thriller and it’s wild to see Robin Williams play a bad guy.
Amanda P: I was in a rom-com mood and wound up rewatching Wedding Season on Netflix, and, seriously, can we get Suraj Sharma in more leading-man roles, stat? (Justice for HIMYF!)
Ashley T.: I rewatched some of What If…? season 2 this week because we were doing some belated coverage of it on my Marvel podcast, Podcast-616. I love what they did with the series this season, especially positioning Peggy Carter at the forefront. Hayley Atwell is just so dang good. I hope this means we’ll get some more alternate-universe Captain Carter in live-action at some point soon.
Amanda W.: With Argylle being released in theaters this weekend, it felt timely to rewatch Matthew Vaughn‘s first action spy comedy, Kingsman: The Secret Service — not that I ever need a reason to watch Taron Egerton.
Ashley W.: I certainly was not going to let Groundhog Day go by without rewatching the time loop episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., 7×09: “As I Have Always Been,” which is also easily one of the series’s best and something I will never shut up about. It’s also a real Dousy of an episode. * wink wink* (If you know, you know!)
Brittany: I’ve been rewatching Top Gear, because there’s a whole 24/7 Top Gear channel on both Pluto TV and Amazon Video. Especially with Jeremy Clarkson affirming that The Grand Tour is coming to an end, it felt right to look back on Top Gear and how much it entertained millions of people, whether or not you knew anything about cars.
I feel safe in saying that there’s never going to be another TV show quite like it. I mean, these are the people who lit caravans on fire and dropped pianos on Morris Marinas with aplomb.
Badass Character of the Week
Rachel: Percy Jackson is a courageous kid who faced Ares, Zeus, and a friend who betrayed him this week. He’s badass in my book.
Ashley T.: Everyone who’s still working on their New Year’s resolutions. It’s difficult to commit to a goal and take actionable steps towards it every day, so no matter your resolutions, if you’re still kicking on them by February, then good on you. Y’all are badasses in my book.
Brittany: Friday brought the sad news that actor Carl Weathers has passed away. My introduction to him was the final season of In the Heat of the Night, when he played Hampton Forbes opposite Carroll O’Connor. Many, many years later, I had the opportunity to interview him when he starred on Chicago Justice as State’s Attorney Mark Jefferies.
He was so incredibly gracious with my anxiety and such a great interview. One of my favorite work photos is he and I on the set of Justice and you can see how amused he is at me having too much fun. Rest in peace, sir; you gave us a lot of tremendous performances, but even more importantly you set a wonderful example as a human being.
Jasmine: Going with my girl Trina Robinson in General Hospital. When evil Esme Prince snuck onboard the ship that Spencer and Trina had chartered while on their trip to France, Trina had to figure out how to not only save herself but how to save her love Spencer.
Just as Esme was preparing to drug Spencer who was tied up, Trina entered the room wrench in hand ready to fight. She and Esme got into a knock down drag out fight that was long overdue. Seeing Trina clock Esme upside the head with the wrench was incredibly satisfying.
