1969 and Palm Royale have proven one thing – it doesn’t matter the time period, people are always going to live beyond their means. They all want to fit in and be at the top of the food chain, not caring what makes them sacrifice. It’s quite a scary thing how life never stops being high school. It’s just a matter of where you’re going to end up on the food chain.
Maxine is so determined to be at the top of that food chain – or at least in the realm of the top. She’s set her sights on where she needs to be and she’s willing to crush anyone who gets in her way. Only she makes it seem as though all she’s trying to do is keep up with them.
It’s definitely not that simple Maxine.
Her husband is leaving and we see that Maxine has basically bought out a boutique trying to one-up Evelyn. Whatever Evelyn is getting, she wants. This is so hard to understand because even though Evelyn has a great fashion sense, it’s for a woman of her age. Not a woman of Maxine’s age.
Also, Evelyn looks like every expensive material threw up on her and decided to just sit there. So whatever reason that Maxine insists on looking like her, whatever. Here we are.
The thing though, Maxine needs to get her sh** together. She’s not paying her hotel bill, but she’s doing everything that she can to fit in with these women, and what she’s doing isn’t right. There’s a want to fit in and theirs you know, being a criminal. But when it comes to Maxine, I guess that is a completely blurred line.
Part of me wants Norma to wake up and really call Maxine out. She doesn’t like her, I know that. Hell, we all know that after this episode. After all, Evelyn announced it to everyone when she told them that Norma told her that Maxine trapped Douglas.
The thing about Palm Beach society is that it feels like they are all a bunch of old hags. Yes, I said that. I went there. Because they are all miserable. I don’t feel like they know life without trying to bring each other down. These women are the most miserable people ever and I am not sure as to why it is that Maxine wants to be a part of it.
But then again, like we’ve all always known that high school mentality seems to follow us all forever.
Maxine cares way too much about what these women think of her. In order to be a part of the society she wants, she’s willing to sacrifice her soul.
There is no club that anyone should want to be a part of that makes them sacrifice their soul. Yet, here we are and Maxine is stealing stuff to try and be a part of the group.
See, she wants to donate something to the latest auction/gala to kinda stick it to Dinah (who still treats her like scum). She can’t find anything in Norma’s home, so she takes this old cat and goes to the gala. Ann, the editor of the shiny sheet, realizes what Maxine has and unintentionally starts a bidding war between Evelyn and Maxine.
A bidding war that results in Maxine paying $75,000 to keep the cat.
And it’s an ugly cat.
But, I guess at least she can return the cat and try to find some redemption. I guess at least there is that.
Only when things are so bad that you lose your place to live, but you’re still trying to fit in, to be a part of some damn club… we’re way past problems.
We’re into certifiable. And well these women, we’re definitely in the certifiable phase.
OTHER THOUGHTS
- Why the hell does Maxine still want to be friends with Dinah? I don’t get it. I really don’t understand.
- Dinah is the worst human being. She is like Maxine with money.
- Maxine gets her third signature when she finds out that Linda is Evelyn Rollins’s stepdaughter, and Penelope has always been a part of the club. Well that my friends is what we call you never know who you’ll meet.
- The whole tennis scene? If you know, you know.
- I can’t with the gala and what it’s for. I wondered if it was a joke, but I know it’s not.
- Douglas is too understanding with Maxine. Kudos to him.
- I do love the fashion in the show, but honestly, I wish Maxine didn’t try to look like Evelyn. I wish she was her own person.
- I really do like Robert. I can’t wait to learn more about him. I have a feeling he’s gonna be more important to the show than I may realize right now.
- The whole modeling scene is my absolute favorite.
