The first season of FOX’s Best Medicine felt too short!
The small-town medical dramedy made Port Wenn a funny and inviting place, a place we want to get back to as soon as possible. The show also has characters we’ve come to care about. That means we have a lot of ideas about what we’d like to see happen in season two, and we’re ready to talk about all of them!
Here’s what we’d like to see happen in season two of Best Medicine!

Progress For the Martin and Louisa Ship

I am a shipper, and I’m not going to apologize for putting this first.
Making an American version of Doc Martin obviously had to include the romantic subplot between Martin (Josh Charles) and Louisa (Abigail Spencer). The couple had a long, winding road to happiness on Doc Martin, and I don’t expect Best Medicine to be any different.
A happy-ending-type moment is unlikely in season two. It’s probably too early for a declaration of feelings, or something like that. However, the writers can craft a satisfying journey for the pair during the season. We’ve already seen their first kiss. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for events to lead up to another.
Besides that, Martin needs character growth to improve his view of love, and season two can do that. I’m interested in the plot details the writers come up with to accomplish these things. I’ll be seated for every ship moment I can get! And the chemistry between Charles and Spencer will make it all worth watching.
Martin Keeps His Practice

Martin found out in the season one finale that the Maine medical board is investigating him for letting his assistant, Elaine (Cree), draw blood without a license. (Is that really a thing?) His childhood bully is the one who reported him out of spite. Considering the fact that Martin only needed the help because he recently developed hemophobia, we are firmly on Martin’s side.
Season two will obviously explore this plot thread further. We hope that somehow the investigation ends positively for Martin, for many reasons. He’s a good doctor, and he clearly loves what he does, so he deserves to keep doing it, despite his cantankerous attitude. Martin is happier in Port Wenn, whether he is ready to admit it or not, and that’s important too. Plus, he’s the town’s only doctor! Martin needs to keep his practice in season two. That’s all there is to it.

Louisa Makes Progress Towards A Baby

Louisa is so likeable that the audience wants her to have what she wants, and right now, that’s a baby. Season one emphasized that Louisa’s window for this is closing. For that reason, I expect season two to advance this plot, and probably quickly, too.
Louisa’s ex, Mark (Josh Segarra), offered to have a baby with her in the season one finale. I have a feeling the writers might go a different route. They have been thoughtful about repairing Louisa and Mark’s relationship as FRIENDS, and with the Martin and Louisa ship going on, I doubt Louisa will have a baby with Mark.
Doc Martin featured a surprise baby plotline between Martin and Louisa. Will Best Medicine do the same? I wouldn’t be surprised. But will that happen during season two? I will be watching to find out! As a side note, I also want the school to stay open so Louisa keeps her job.
A Love Interest For Mark

Mark is a precious cinnamon roll who must be protected at all costs. He is the funniest character on the show, and Segarra plays him perfectly. Mark went through a lot during season one. Louisa had just broken up with him when the series began, he accidentally impaled himself, and he also faced other medical challenges.
I think season 2 would be a good time for the writers to explore the possibility of long-term romantic happiness for him. He needs to internalize that his future won’t involve Louisa, not romantically, and then he can open himself up to a new serious relationship. His attempt to be a playboy in season one didn’t work for him. Seeing Mark really fall for someone could be really sweet, maybe funny too, and I know Segarra would pull it all off wonderfully.

Sarah Keeps Her House

Martin’s Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts) is another character we’re invested in. She is still in danger of losing her house, thanks to Martin’s horrible parents. And I want season two to resolve that question. I want Sarah to keep her house.
The writers gave the audience a possible path to this resolution in the season one finale when Sarah found sea urchins in the bay, which are worth money. That’s a way she could buy the house from Martin’s father. Or the writers could come up with another solution. Whatever happens, I hope they make it interesting and heartwarming.
I doubt that we’ll get the satisfaction of seeing her stick it to Martin’s father in person. However, the situation can deepen her relationship with Martin. Potts is a legend who can convey anything the writers give her. I’m ready to see her finish this storyline and see what’s next.
More of Port Wenn

One thing that makes this small town special is all the background characters. They pop up briefly in each episode, usually say or do something funny, and then we wait until we see them again. They all contribute to how quirky and endearing Port Wenn is. I want this to continue in season two.
This place wouldn’t be the same without the townspeople, and I want them to be the same unusual yet lovable people they’ve always been. That includes Greg (Stephen Spinella) and George (Jason Veasey), little Peter Cronk (Ben Lewis Doherty), the three teens who heckle everyone nonstop, and more. All of them should have a place in season two.
I also hope Port Wenn continues to be a place with silly local traditions and one that’s full of medical mysteries for Martin to solve. That’s what makes it distinctive.
We have a long wait, but season two of Best Medicine is coming, and if what the writers have in store is anything like what I’ve talked about here, I’ll be happy to keep visiting Port Ween every week!
Best Medicine airs Tuesdays at 8 PM on FOX and is streaming on Hulu.
