Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 18 “Personal Foul,” focuses on Danny and Lena’s investigation into helping save a young basketball player after she is a target of a stalking incident. The case has an interesting twist which we appreciate and can relate to real live events.
Lena also continues to deal with her feelings about her biological father and meeting her sister for the first time. Her feelings, along with a surprise visit from her sister’s husband, set up the events for the last two episodes of the season, and we’re excited about what’s to come.

Illegal Basketball Activities

Lena and Danny spent the beginning of “Personal Foul” trying to find Soraya’s stalker. The case took a turn when we learned the father of the young basketball player was responsible for a point shaving scandal which led to the murder of Soraya’s basketball coach.
We honestly didn’t see that twist coming. We didn’t think her father would be the bad guy, especially since he was so concerned about his daughter in the beginning. And, to be fair, he was concerned about his daughter when she was kidnapped, but that doesn’t change the fact that he was the one that put her in danger in the first place.
The Boston Blue writers must be following current basketball events.
In real life, Chauncey Billups, a very well liked former basketball player and current NBA coach, is being investigated for being a huge part of a illegal poker betting scheme. So many people, including myself, were shocked about Billups since he was considered one of the most respected best people in the sport.
In this episode, Soraya’s father is one of Danny’s favorite basketball players. Danny and Soraya were both shocked and upset that he could do all of these horrible things. This story just shows that you really never know everything about someone. And maybe you shouldn’t idolize athletes or celebrities.
Lena’s Personal Life

The most interesting part of “Personal Foul” wasn’t the case; it was Lena’s personal life. She’s still trying to process learning who her father is and that she has a sister. At first she tries to just not talk about it, but we know that never works. She finally confides in Brian about her feelings, and they’re all very valid.
Lena is rightfully upset that her father loved her sister and not her. And we’re glad Brian was supportive and wanted to be there for her, even if he was initially upset that she didn’t confide in him before Danny. It seems like Lena and Brian’s relationship is going in the right direction.
At the end of the episode, Asher shows up and reveals he knows that his wife is Lena’s sister. He can’t keep this secret from his wife, and honestly, we applaud him for wanting to be honest. And he was a stand up guy by giving Lena a heads up. But we’re really concerned about where this is heading.
Obviously, this is setting up a major story for the last two episodes of the season, and there’s potential for major drama and fallout from everyone knowing about Lena’s biological father. We’re excited to see what plays out.
Other Thoughts:

- Jonah’s story this week is also relevant to current events. He doesn’t want to be a cop that ruins a young Black man’s life. When Jonah realized his mistake he wanted to not only be a better cop, but a better person. It’s not just talk either; he did the work to apologize and try to make things right. And that’s how we know Jonah’s one of the good guys.
- It’s hilarious that Danny can’t keep a secret. He’s out there just telling Brian and Lena everything he knows. Hey Danny, maybe when someone tells you they want to take their girlfriend on a trip, just keep that to yourself. Don’t spoil the surprise.
- Danny giving Lena a Twix when she was upset was cute.
- We’re happy, and a little surprised, that Boston Blue circled back to the Yancy storyline. Lena really did Yancy a favor by not going easy on him the last time he appeared. And it turns out that tough love was what he needed. The time in jail made him realize that he wanted out of the gang and needed to start a new life.
Boston Blue airs Friday at 10/9c on CBS.
